If you're asking what stock VW tape players were available when, here ya go... I have service manuals listing these:

AM/8-track - 1967 Sapphire VIII model A7MV
1971 Sapphire XVII model 1VW4112
1973 Sapphire XXI models 1VW4309 & 5VW4309
1974 Sapphire XXI models 1VW4419 & 5VW4419

AM/FM/MPX/8-track - 1974 no Sapphire designation, models 1VW4412 & 5VW4412
1975 no Sapphire designation, model 1VW4516

AM/Playtape - 1968 Playtape I model PA8MV & Playtape II model PP8MV

None of them are easy to find and they were all made by Motorola.

Just returned from a long day digging thru the estate of a local horder.... and in the junk was found a few radios from the 1960's. I've been buying radios for 15 years and have never seen a VW factory 8 Track, in person or on ebay.

Here's what I dug up today: "AM/8-track - 1967 Sapphire VIII model A7MV"

This radio is nice cosmetically with all original knobs and wire harness. I'm petty sure that some issues will be found with the rubber belts on the 8track so I'm not going to bother testing. The dial selector does move freely. Door on 8track opens and closes as it should.

Sorta late.... photos will come in the morning hours.

Here's mine.
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=591456&highlight=
I bought it from a person that collects and restores old radios. This radio was gone thru with belts changed and heads cleaned up/tested and is ready to install but my square is still in it's rebuild stage. It rests in a padded box in the garage. My intent is to outsource my metal fab place to create me a new faceplate that's fits my Type 3 with all the dimension of the of the existing faceplate for the radio. Should be a fun project.

Day off.... no time to clean it up... from experience the chrome is going to clean up very nicely. Dry storage was a plus.

Many years ago I saw an inexpensive Blaupunkt 8 track for sale at a VW show and didn't buy it!

That Beatles 8 track has to be worth some scratch! Im ticked that when i gave up renting my storage unit i sold off about 200 8 tracks. I had some rare reggae and jazz ones. Crying or Very sad

Thanks for the heads up. Too bad about your tapes. Who knew 8 tracks might become valuable

NP. Nah i knew cause i paid a pretty penny for a few of them. I just didnt want to have to store them in a 2 BR 1BA condo of my then GF who is now my Wife!!! If i could find an underdash 6 volt 8 track player for the bus i would get back into the game. I used to store them in different vintage suitcases. and have them on the back seat of my old squreback

Just installed in my 69 beetle.:
It has a sticker with something about Riviera Motors VW on the top, but I didn't take a pic.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

It didn't have knobs, I used the ones off the broken tape player I removed. You can't install an 8-track with these knobs on Sad
The 8-track doesn't work, but the radio sounds great.
I may have the wrong faceplate.
from online search for "Blaupunkt 8-track"
