I have these two dog houses that I think are for stock T2 engines. It looks like the difference is around the oil cooler with the one on the right having the extra bit of tin for the cooler to be offset on an engine from the engine that uses the dog house on the left in the picture. Can someone give me an idea of what these two would typically be used for?

The black one has the oil cooler inside the shroud and inhibits airflow to the 3/4 side. The purple one has the "dog house" where air is diverted to the oil cooler and air is more efficiently delivered to the cylinders/head. The air flow is divided between the two. Hot oil cooler air is diverted to the front and the remaining fresh air is forced through the head/cylinders. |

As stated, the one on the left is NOT a Dog House shroud. _________________ Glenn

Ahhhh! The dog house is not the entire fan housing it is the modification that allows the oil cooler to be moved out of the way of #3.
Thanks very much! |

A doghouse shroud has a dedicated air supply for the cooler. You can see the volute for the cooler wrapped around the inlet. This way it does not "steal" the cooling air from the 3-4 side.
The later beetle shrouds also have a venturi ring built into the air inlet. Never heard how much this would have increased the air flow. Don't know what was used on shrouds for the Mexican and Brazilian market. |

So now I am wondering if the doghouse completely addresses the #3 cooling issue I read about every now and then? |

With the offset cooler and doghouse shroud, all the cylinders get a similar amount of air flow. |
