After getting the exterior sorted for the most part, it was time to start on the interior. Much like the exterior, the interior has remained untouched throughout the years. I need to get better pictures of the floor mats and such. But here are some clean up pics of the seats and door panels.
The rear seat was disgusting, just dirty but clearly not used much.

Rear door panels were the same story. Im wondering if he hauled stuff for the job in the back seat.

Unfortunately thats all I took pictures of at the time. Ill get more in the coming weeks as its time to give her a good bath again.

I have a drawer full of stuff from the original owners. I decided to put a couple pieces back in the glove box for good luck. Not sure which owner they came from but they still have they're sunglasses and comb in the car.

After all that we drove her 200 miles to the Wasatch Classic in Provo, Utah.
Gotta say I'm much happier with the car in its original glory.

Then it was time for our event VW's At The Springs. The car much like many of the others at the event that weekend worked as a tube cart for floating the river.

Took the real camera out to my favorite spot to do photos for Vintage Volkswagen Preservation Society on Facebook. Here is the car after all the cleaning and correcting. Iv got some tiny things to correct but for the most part this is how she came off the dealer lot.

A whole lot of time and a machine polisher. Most of the car was done with just buffing compound, only a couple spots had to be hit with a cutting compound.

Winter is always slow paced but we have still been out enjoying the car.
I’ll tell you what, the helphos spot light definitely comes in handy up on the forest service roads at night. It’s incredible how bright it is for just being 6v.

Also finally ordered our new firestone bias plys. Not only do they look great but, Iv been really impressed with them in the snow and rain. We took the car up to our local ski resort today with a lot of snow falling and not once did they loose traction.

Having a baby in June, kept the year pretty sparse in the VW world.
But we will never miss Volksfest in Moxee, Washington. We ended up having a friend getting married in Spokane, Washington the weekend after Volksfest. I decided that instead of driving to the show then coming back for two days and then heading back up. I would just stay up there and explore, while waiting for family to get to our meeting spot.

Left work on Thursday afternoon with a rack full of original paint wheels, and camping gear in the back seat.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Unfortunately or luckily, however you want to look at it. As soon as I crested the hill into Boise, Idaho the car developed a intermittent hesitation. After a few miles of trying to figure out if I was feeling the normal Idaho wind, or the car she stopped running and left me on the side of the road. The usual checks were all good, so a phone call to my buddy Shortbus (chad) the trailer was on the way.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Ended up that the fuel pump had given up, I rebuilt the one from the car in Chad's shop and Hitest let me borrow a known good one for the trip. Slept the nerves off in boise and set off with 2 of the bus pilots boys. Spent about an hour on the side of the road in Oregon with a bad distributor in the bus we were with, but we made it to Washington on time.

Friday night we stay in the Big Pine campground in Yakima Canyon. Its great catching up with friends from Canada, Washington, Oregon, and idaho. After having to much fun and not realizing what time it was I decided I wasn't going to set the tent up and just sleep in the back of the car. Worst decision Ive ever made.

Time to head into town for some breakfast and then get camp set up in the park. Sledvw talked me into letting him drive the 61 and I would drive his 51 (twist my arm). It was cool to see my car ripping down the canyon road.

Volksfest is by far my favorite event of the year. Its not the biggest by far but its the atmosphere and people that make it great. We take over the only city park in Moxee, and the town has always been so great. The beer definitely makes the swap difficult, but the endless NOS parts work better than a cold shower and a cup of coffee.

Shortbus makes the best Tri Tip Ive ever had the pleasure of eating. Good enough we all take a lick off the cutting board. Not the most sanitary thing to do but so worth it.

Ill post more of the trip later tonight.

From Yakima I headed north to Winthrop, Washington, thanks to Sledvw for the hospitality. On the way up I kept having a intermittent miss, we finally pulled over to trouble shoot

Ended up that the center pin in the distributor cap somehow fell out of the cap. Pulled the distributor out of the car and turned it upside down, and there it was. We popped it back in and i haven't had a problem with it since.

Other than that the trip for the day was amazing with some awesome views. We ran on the banks of the columbia river for probably 50 miles.

Winthrop was a great little town, can't wait to take the wife up there and visit again soon. Everything in town feels like your in the wild west, on top of that i filled up my car before paying for the first time in years.

The goal for the next day was to make it to Anacortes, Washington to catch the ferry to San Juan Island. I didn't realize it would be easily the most amazing drive and sights I have ever had in my life.
First off its hard to be anywhere in Washington and not be impressed by the scenery. But Washington state highway 20 is a must drive road in a air-cooled. Probably the closest you will get to driving in the alps in the U.S.
This is the sight just 15-20 minutes outside of Winthrop. Pictures don't really do the size of this cliff justice. I found that the only word I could get out of my mouth every time I would stop was a four letter curse word.

I probably stopped on the journey up Washington Pass 15 times, honestly to the point I almost missed my ferry.

Great updates to an awesome thread!

And Mr. Croane- Tri-tip is the tastiest roast of ANY bovine- as taken from Wikepedia: "The tri-tip is a triangular cut of beef from the bottom sirloin sub primal cut, consisting of the tensor fasciae latae muscle"

And Cody understands the magnitude of travelling with Chad's meat. Sure, we all talk VWs and blah blah blah. But really, the licking of the cutting board from Chad's tri-tip is the high point of any camping trip. We've got 3 of us doing it now. Cool

I've wanted to visit the San Juan Islands for quite some time now. Glad i decided to do it with one of our cars, ripping around the island roads was a blast. Plenty of conversation was had on the ferry, people couldn't believe how far I was from home.
The first night I decided to rent a little cabin so I could take a shower and get some real sleep. Exploring Friday Harbor was a blast, while walking on the docks I realized how poor I am. As usual I found the brewery.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I originally was only going to stay one day on the island, but I realized that I really didn't get to explore the actual island. I ended up getting a tent site at San Juan County park. My spot was only about 20 feet from the bay looking across the straights to Canada.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I spent the rest of the day getting lost on the island, Ive got to say I fell in love with it.

I ended up visiting the English Encampment at the far end of the island. The road in was the perfect place for pictures.

That night was the longest night of the trip, while the fire was going it was perfect. But as soon as I put it out the dew set in and I was freezing. The seals in the bay didn't help the situation, Ive never heard such god awful sounds. I got up that morning to the only hint of Washington weather I had on the trip. For most people that would be a good thing, but I absolutely love driving my car in gloomy weather.

Lets finish this trip off.
Left the island to meet my family in Leavenworth for a couple days. Hated leaving but i couldn't wait to see the baby. The fog was a pleasant farewell as i was leaving.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

As is the story with the whole trip, the drive to Leavenworth is phenomenal. The last time the wife and I went we found a awesome little pull off with a decent hiking trail along the creek that features many decent sized water falls. I had to stop and stretch my legs again on this trip.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

After some car hunting off the beaten path, I rolled into Leavenworth just in time for beer thirty. So I killed some time while waiting on family to get to town.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Baby got her first ride in the car while moving to our parking space at the hotel.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

We stayed in Leavenworth for two days then set off for Spokane to make it to our friends wedding.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Literally only about 2 exits away from our hotel in Spokane we had about a 25% loss in power on the free way. No noises just like a gust of wind hitting us head on. I kept listening while we limped it to the hotel. Unfortunately we had to get ready for the wedding right as we got to the hotel so it had to sit for the night. I woke up the next morning and went out and checked the usual stuff like points and and other ignition stuff. I started it to see if I could figure it out and thats when it happened. Apparently we stretched the #4 exhaust valve and after sitting and cooling down it snapped when I started the car.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The plan was to stay at some little cabins in Montana that night. So I arranged with Scott (Motofly196) to tow bar the car to Eric's house for safe keeping till I could figure out how to get it home. Luckily I talked my brother into driving the truck and tow bar up to Montana to hand off. My dad and I then woke up and drove back to Spokane, grabbed the car, and drove home to Pocatello. All in all about 12 hours and 850 miles of driving.

Such a shame that the trip prematurely ended with a mechanical failure. You have some fine shots of the trip; the ones I like most are the mountain scenes. Were you able to repair the engine and get it running again in the meantime? And take the opportunity to replace the other 3 exh valves? Since you did not hear a big noise when the exhaust head broke off, how was the top of the #4 piston- reusable?

Yeah, I got it home and pulled the head. We opted to just swap heads as the valve seat had some dings in it. The top of the piston took a hit but nothing that will keep us off the road. I wasn't terribly worried about this engine, we are getting ready to rebuild the numbers matching engine this winter.

After decompressing from the trip for a week or so, I pulled the engine. The head got pretty marred up and the valve head wedged itself into the seat. The piston took a couple dings but nothing that made me worry about it. Were building the numbers matching block this winter and the stroker that is currently in the car is on its last line bore. So were just going to run it around town until the matching engine is done. After swapping the heads I checked everything over and it all looked good. Were back and running again, we have already taken it on a couple trips to Lava Hot Springs which is about a hour away and the car did great.

Throughout the time of the trip I was in contact with a Walla Walla, Washington historian who decided to help me track down the original family of the car.
He gave me Facebook profiles to numerous people with Mantz as a last name, unfortunately none of them panned out and the people had never heard of the original owners. I did luck out and he found a picture including the Mantz family including old man William.

Another interesting fact, the car never left the Mantz family until I took possession. Joe Starkey was actually married to Mabel Mantz Jr, so Im still the 3rd registered owner but it was always in the same family since new.
Were still pushing forward and I hope to find some living family members.
