When you're all done, can we all come over and blow up some Guinness in the backyard? Or do it right and drink it...
Looking good. You're into the work that's totally not in my wheelhouse but I'm enjoying learning from your thread as always. _________________ 1968 FI Squareback |

Sometimes,
A day of work means driving around running errands,
And nagging people to move along!
So we'll add it as a post here,
Because it's all part of the process..
Here's Steve Brazil, who has had my seat covers for months,
Actually working!
(Rare indeed, had to get a picture, nobody would believe it otherwise)
Do you see my seat covers hidden in there somewhere?
Went by Larry the Painter.
Helps to have a kid along;
They get to see how there's a little kid who wants to go and ride in the toy..
Maybe it will work on his head a bit?
Also went and bugged Ian the Polisher again.
He did wheel #3, so only one more to go..
I called and nagged Valley Plating Service to get my chrome,
And,
They got it done,
And don't take credit cards.
That'll show me!
How am I actually going to get $1500 real dollars in my bank account to write that big of a check on?
Finally,
Got my e-brake cables figgered out,
And sent off to California Push Pull for shortening..
So,
Progress is progress, right?
Even if no actual work was done, it took all day.. _________________ Bus Motor Build

It's funny how you can burn up a day doing nothing, but still make progress by getting others to actually work. What's wrong with that picture?
At least you got something accomplished for your day out and about. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Good way to spend the day. I think the best day spent away form the project is in a yard stripping A carcass down to help your project along. Look forward to your next update! _________________ MonT3

Well, I got distracted by that damn Oval again..
All the parts are here to put together the 1776.
I'm documenting the build here, if anyone cares:
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=8663116#8663116
Did go to the hardware store and get some rubber washers.
Allowed me to bolt up that front sub mount made so many years ago..
This led to the trans getting stabbed for some mock-up.
Makes me happy to see some 'finished' parts next to each other.
That's finished in single quotation marks... _________________ Bus Motor Build

Is it Galley plug or Gallery plug? I always forget. But I know you won’t _________________ Keep on Busin'

Galley. Absolutely.
Those 'gallery' people are 100% wrong.
The bearings are 'fed' oil.

So,
Figured I'd check in..
Steve the upholsterer still has the front seats,
But he HAS been working on them.
I took the rear seat to Ray's in Watsonville; they said they would start in about a month.
Ian still hasn't done the last wheel.
Have to go and see Larry the Painter; scared he'll hit me up, or hasn't done anything..
Here are the results of retrieving my chrome from Valley Plating Service:
It will be a long haul to perfection, no doubt.
I'll spare the details..
They say they will make right on a few of these issues,
But on others,
They just don't have the skills.
Superior Chrome is supposed to re-open in August,
Otherwise, I might find a place in Texas or Florida or somewhere where people still care/try..
There you have it.. Still going, not very strongly, though.. _________________ Bus Motor Build

Can I ask why two different upholsterers? And what are the plans for the interior? I was kind thinking of having mine done in leather rather than vinyl. One benefit of living here is not many would notice. Might even have to pass it off as a factory option...
There is a chrome place here in Calgary that I had do all my show bike stuff. If you want to send me a piece, I can work with them to see if it can be fixed. |

Have you checked out Sherm's Custom Plating in Sacramento? I have a client who uses them for their high end Pebble Beach cars. They have won best of show twice, so they have high standards on their restorations.
I have also heard that Queen City Plating in Mukilteo, WA does great work (though very expensive). Keep up the good work, love watching the progress. |

I had a similar experience with chrome...took three shops before I got a 'decent' finish. Two of the shops told me that the old potmetal is a bitch to clean and chrome without damaging it. I don't know if any of that is true but the last shop did a 'decent' job and they were 30% more than the other two would have charged.
Best chrome job I had ever seen was from Mexico back in the 90's - some 80 year old dude with one eye and a limp (not joking). A friend of mine sent a bunch of Chevy parts down there and I went with him to pick them up. I've never seen chrome that clean or perfect since...
I suspect that you'll need to send your stuff out of state/out of the country to get a decent chrome job - most of the chemicals used 'back in the day' are banned in California. |

Yup, Reoccurring theme here.
I'm trying to do something from a past time..
I drug the arms out, and finished up moving some brake hose brackets.
Finish welded and ground the e-brake cable tube hackage..
Got the trans fully into place and all bolts tight;
Did a few different kinds of mock-ups using a cart and trans jack.
Some of these mounts had the bolt holes drilled in some wacky places!
Who on earth would do such a thing!?!?!
Better mark it MOST obviously.
Anyhow,
Will hopefully have Darren erase the stupid tomorrow..
Onward and upward and sideways! _________________ Bus Motor Build

See, that's the problem when your build thread gets too big.
Then you end up answering questions to things that were answered already,
Because nobody would read the whole thing..
See pages 83 and 78 for upholstery questions.
There were more, no doubt..
The reason I went and took the rear seat to a different place,
Is because Steve just sat on my stuff for half a year or so already.
He called me about my seats,
And I was all stoked, thinking he had worked on them,
but,
He just called me to tell me a mouse chewed some holes in the covers while they sat in his dumpy shop for months and months..
Good thing TMI already screwed up and sent me wrong covers,
Because then i had material to patch the ones the mouse chewed up..!
I tell ya, living in California.. It's just a circus..

Oh, and, thanks for the tips.
I have heard of Sherm's; supposedly they are tip-top.
In all fairness, there are a lot of parts here that came out great.
Markers and door handles and front turn signal housings, and..
We only show pics of the stuff that is wrong, for some reason..
I'll just be chipping away at all of the other little pieces;
Rear seat ashtrays, and their ilk, are low priority after all.
They are stripping the chrome off of anything i wasn't happy about.
So i can get it smoothed out, or replaced with better, on my own.
Some things, like that tail-light housing, they will be re-doing.
So,
Just chip away at it..
Superior is supposed to be back at it in August! _________________ Bus Motor Build

Clatter, I have never commented before, but have been enjoying your build thread for some time. I just have to say that your chrome shop should be well ashamed for sending you back such crappy workmanship. Could they really expect that ANYONE would be satisfied and proud to bolt those parts back on their VW? Really? I hope they make things right for you, or at least refund you for their lame attempt on some of those components... Finding a good upholstery guy in my area is difficult too who can do a good job, and do it in a reasonable amount of time... The last one "offed" himself partway through doing some seats for my Dad's hotrod! _________________ 1974 "Restfalia" Camper 2000 cc EFI 2001-
