Hello, I just got this clutch hook in the mail. It was advertised by a Samba Member as fitting a later-model Beetle, but it doesn’t look like my old one at all.

It is about 7inches long. The hook has a hole drilled in it, and the hook itself is 2 inches long—not 2 1/2 inches like the later models. It also has a strange end that has been turn d smaller than the rest of the shaft. Anyone know what it is?

The offset hook like that instead of straight makes me lean toward it being for a 58-64 Bug, part number 113721305A.

I would agree!!!

But why is the end tapered or shouldered? I do not remember any clutch pedal shafts having that tapered end on them.

Not sure why the end is stepped down, haven't seen any others like that.

I have done some further checking and agree it’s a 58-1964 clutch shaft.

It has a VW mark on the “tapered” end, but I can’t figure out why there’s a hole drilled in the hook. WTH is that all about?

Regardless, I contacted the seller and he apologized. He agrees he sent the wrong one, told me to keep this one, and will send the correct shaft.

Hitest, when I receive the correct part, I will add to his plethora of good feedback.

I’m still wondering why there’s a hole drilled in the hook Shocked .

I'd almost guarantee the hole is there so one can retain the clutch cable on the hook with a bit of wire while installing the pedal assembly -- it removes the chance of frustration when the pedal assembly is almost home and the pedal flops over, letting the clutch cable come loose.

I’ve never seen a clutch shaft with a turned end, either. That one defies my imagination.

What happens if you put a too tall clutch hook in a '73+? There was a thread recently somewhere on the SAMBA where a guy's clutch cable was sawing a groove in the front end of the clutch cable guide tube. Could that be why?
