I have recently purchased a 1960 Ragtop and it has the smaller "hump" gas tank, I'd like to put a fuel gauge on the car but not sure which sending unit to purchase or if its even possible... I've seen a couple of pics of tanks with sending units... can yal point me in the right direction? |

You can get a period correct electric gauge, either original or there may be reproductions. For mechanical, you’d need a dehne gauge- those are pretty hard to find and will be expensive.
There may be a dehne reproduction mechanical gauge out there- you’d just have to research.
Folks may have come up with another solution, but these are the typical gauges you’d see in a 1960 VW.
Dehne:

My 60 had a Dehne like the one pictured below. You’d typically seee this type in a bus or oval window bug- note the lack of trim on the sides:

I think the most difficult part is finding a sending unit that will work with the hump tank, or else use a different tank. Since a 1960 didn't have a fuel gauge you can then use pretty much whatever you like that looks good. Interested if anyone has come up with a sending unit that will work with the hump tank. |

yes, there are senders out there where you drill a hole in the side of the filler neck to mount, they were a common accessory from multiple manufacturers
just one example (I don't have any more senders) :

I have one like what Erik G posted on my vert. This is where it mounts on the filler neck.

Can you post a few more pics of your setup, including looking down into the fuel opening with the cap off? Thanks. |
