Leaky fuel sender gasket or detached vent tube fuel line is my guess.

Over on the left side of your engine compartment is the #24 that you see over on the left there. That's likely the bad one causing your fuel smell. You CAN get to it without removing anything. Get a light and follow the vent lines to see it.

There's only a few that you have to access by removing the firewall, which you can do with the engine in place if needed but def check the above spot first.

If you haven't done so you need to replace all the rubber hoses and elbows in the fuel supply system.

Filler neck elbow
Filler pipe boot
All the connections in the vent system
Anything not up to par in the carbon canister setup.

The rubber gets pretty crusty over time

it would help if you added your year bus to your signature line, or avatar etc. If it is a Type 1 engine then yes the engine needs to come out to get into the tank area. If it is a late bay you can work around it and lower the engine a little - remove parts. I prefer to remove the engine myself and then while I am working on it, also work on the tank area. Your leak can be in any one of several places, most already listed by prior posters. We would need a crystal ball to know which (or if all) of those areas is causing the leak(s).

I am working on a 1976 bus that is leaking fuel also, a lot of fuel. Hoping it is not the tank but I think it is. Gas is coming out as fast I pour it in. Any help would be great. How do I remove the tank? Does the motor have to come out? Thanks in advance

The engine doesn't have to come out, but it is easier and faster with it out.

You need to verify where the fuel is leaking from before tearing into things, assuming that you can figure it out. I replaced all the rubber stuff on my old '74 more than 20 years ago and on my 77 when I bought it a dozen years back. Assuming nothing has been replaced over time, there is almost zero chance that all the rubber pieces of the fuel tank fill and vent systems are still doing their job well at this point in time.

I had a problem last year. The whole cabin smelled of fuel. It was filling the fuel cap recess with fuel. The drip pipe was also blocked. The filler cap cork seal was brittle. I changed the cap seal and that fixed it. Not a problem since. Worth checking.
