Hello friends

Here I present to you, my Variant II, a Brazilian national project, which uses 1600 engine, Mcpherson front suspension and IRS rear suspension.

She drove about 218 KM coming home, no problems, is running very well and over time I'm putting her up to date.

Thanks vwuberalles!

In some ways yes, I will explain why:

Brasilia starts having a direct relationship with the Variant II, if I'm not mistaken, in 1978, when they expanded the displacement, they adopted the double carburation and the front suspension of pivot.
Brasília, used the traditional standing engine, with 1600 displacements and double carburation.
The transmission was 8x35 ratio and traditional rear Beattle suspension.
As far as I'm aware, they share rear taillights, bumper, front flashlight (NOTE: only the lens masking is different from model to model)
Among other parcitulariedades that have been applied in the two, and make them share some more pieces.

In Variant II:

They adopted the use of another position in the engine, in Brazil it is known as engine lying, I do not know what they call elsewhere.
McPherson front suspension and IRS rear suspension.
The transmission was of 8x33 ratio.
Another novelty was the new wheelbase, increased by 9.5 centimeters.
It had production of 78 to 81 and is considered by many, a mistake of the volkswagen. For scholars, the car was a serious mistake for Volkswagen, which could have launched the Variant version of the Passat (the German VW used the name for its vans, which persists to this day), produced more than three years ago. It was said that the choice for Variant II was due to the better efficiency of the rear-wheel drive in muddy climbs.
The production was short lived, because soon after, Volkswagen launched another van in the same category, Parati, which already had a water cooled engine and other technologies considered "new" here,
arriving at 82 and replacing the Variant II.

For information purpose:

Cool, thanks for the info! It's fascinating how different parts of the world got totally different models.

True, always nice to know more about the history of one model or another. Very Happy

Today, I fixed the locks, made a new key and repaired the system, which still works well original.

I dismantled the shift lever which was with a very old grease and screwing a lot, like it was sand.
I cleaned everything, new grease and adjusted the lever, it got much better.

What's up guys.

The Madalena accelerator was too heavy, I was sure something was wrong.

The part that drives the double carburettor was assembled wrongly, the screw that runs through the part, was with a very old and very dirty grease, it was oscillating at idle, because the rod size was wrong and the cable was not completely stretched I stretched the same and now it accelerates everything it gives.

Now the accelerator is very soft, I gave an equalized in the pair, but obviously it is still unregulated, only with a vacuum gauge to make an exact adjustment, but it was much better is walking well.

Very nice. For what it's worth, check where the throttle cable is connected to the bell crank, it appears that it's not rotating freely & could cause the cable to snap at the end ferrule.

And make sure that you install the cover for the generator cooling shroud, you're losing lots of air meant for cooling the engine through there.

Thanks for the answer TDCTDI!

Following the photos, you can see that I dismounted the same, the screw that makes the circular movement inside the holder,
it was cleaned, added new grease, and as a finish and guarantee that it would not screw into the holder when it was spinning, with a fine sandpaper, carefully removed the thick layer of rust, which in theory would be able to hold the support to the point of being on the accelerator pedal
and be perceptible by driving. Razz

Now it's very light, I think I did not express myself well.

Was that the piece you're saying?

If it is, I will arrange it urgently, unaware of such a function. :/

Yes, this is the cover.

Also notice that in this same picture, that the throttle cable end is in a straight line to the cable itself.

Thiago Medeiros wrote:

In the picture that you provided of your car, the cable end is at a 45* angle. If this is because cable clamp isn't able to rotate properly, then the cable will fatigue & break at the end.

I only recently heard about this model, and am fascinated! To fit that Giugiaro-type squared body onto the old backbone Bug/Type 3 style chassis took some ingenuity, and the results are undeniably modern on what is based on a 1930s design.

Then adding he McPherson strut/rack&pinion front end must have done wonders for the "wandering" tendency of the old style steering, about my only complaint about the tough torsion bar setup. It must be fantastic to drive!

It's really too bad this did not catch on. The dependability of the air cooled engine, with Type 3 cooling, coupled with a modern body and front suspension, would be the best VW ever.

I hope more are found. Next time you have it up on a rack, I'd love to see photos of that front suspension and steering setup.

Is the rear swing axles or "IRS" CV-joint? It would be interesting to see one with a full Type 3 automatic...

Congrats on saving a real milestone car!

That's an interesting car with some cool history! I think I'd do something with the plastic gas lines and filter that's hovering dangerously close to the distributor...

For me is the best air cooled VW wagon made (remember, Brasilia is not wagon but a hatch).

I have one 1979 VW Variant II very very new:
