I recently came across this rust free barndoor for sale. I am definitely picking it up. It is missing some parts but owner stated they are all inside the car. Had to take a spy shot as he didn't want any pics taken. It is an 11 window. I am not new to busses as I own a '60 15 wind and an early '64 21 wind bus. But I am mostly a type 3 guy.

Cool! Get it.

FYI, it looks like the nose might be clipped, it has the wiper arm depressions of a later Bus.

Barndoor with no large dip in the metal

At this point, not very worried about incorrect parts. I’ve see worse. But thanks for the good advice as I will need it.

My concern is that this bus didn't start life as barndoor at all. I don't know why, but the front of the roof just appears odd to me. Then factor in the incorrect bits on the front, and the fact you weren't allowed to take photos, it just makes me very suspicious. Just make sure it really is a barndoor before you hand over your cash

Agreed.
The steering wheel doesn’t look Barndoor. And maybe the bulkhead as well?

Well, I've seen monstruosities and the rear rusty license plate holder of a barndoor be brought back into a full barndoor bus and no one has a problem with it. So this does not scare me, it is cheap and comes with a few parts. Yes it may not be correct but for the price, it will do. What ever happened to "Wow! another one saved?"

I'll keep you posted and I'll be back for advice, if it gets too complicated, then It will be sold.

FWIW, I'll assume it's legit but with a few repairs over the years until you know otherwise.
Not uncommon...

Let us know what happens.

Check for a VIN # out back or see if it at least has a round transmission carrier:

This is not Barndoor only but at least it's Wolfsburg Bus so you know it's early.

We all want to say "Wow! another one saved?" And you are right any Barndoor, rusty or bodged is a save. The comments above aren’t about that. It’s people concerned that you might not be buying a Barndoor at all! But a latter bus edited to look Barndoor. We are just trying to help know what your buying.

Sorry for being negative, I just wanted you to be sure that you knew if it was a genuine barndoor bus or not. I would hate for someone to be thinking they were buying a barndoor for it to turn out to be a modified later bus, especially if you had paid a genuine barndoor price for it.

I was thinking about easy stuff to spot and:
- Huge Barndoor decklid (obviously)
- Barndoor back window someone mentioned above - It's a trapezoid instead of a rectangle
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

- Dash is a little pod for Kombis and Standards
- 3-spoke steering wheel
- Front floor is totally flat, not like a later Bus where it swoops up near the nose and has a foot rest on the passenger side
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

- Cargo doors
Outside has a handle with the key hole underneath
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Inside rear cargo latch is different than a later Bus
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

- The front seat bulkhead is flat all the way across - there is no spare tire well there.
Deluxe but see how it goes straight across
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

16" wheels that look like slightly larger Bug smoothie wheel
No slots like a later Bus 15" or 14" wheel

There is more stuff of course but that is some easy stuff to id

Maybe it's just me but the rear window is visible in this pic and looks pretty darn square.
