What would be the consensus on prefered engine cleaner? I normally resort to either kerosene or diesel but this 60 year old goo is tough to get rid off.
Don´t have access to pro motor bath. Never tried steam though, is it effective enough to invest in some kind of a steaming gadget for amateur use?

I have a big spray can of "regular brake cleaner" but it´s not much effective, dries too quickly as well.
Seems like both the kerosene and diesel are more effective cleaners than that.

I used kerosene and then 3 different kinds of “wire brushes”. Wiped it off, sprayed it with WD40 and polished it a microfiber rag. Looks like new. Well, almost. |

Wurth makes a good engine cleaner in a spray can. Not a miracle worker, but does work on softened dirt. It might help to pre soak with a solvent.

Kerosene and diesel are rather dangerous both from sparks, odor and your skin absorbs. Varsol is a preferred cleaning solvent. Before removing from vehicle - visit a wand DIY car wash, spray engine with engine degreaser, and then spray with the wand's high pressure water. _________________ CMC '57 Porsche Speedster Replica and Dolphin boat tailed full pan VW MOD-T Street Buggy |

I highly doubt they still have engine degreasers at the car wash in Sweden. I believe those have been outlawed for at least 20 years out of environmental concerns. |

Buy the engine degreaser at a local auto store. There are petroleum and environmentally friendly ones available. GUNK is the most familiar one. Even Simple Green/Purple Power will dissolve some grease aided by the high pressure wand. _________________ CMC '57 Porsche Speedster Replica and Dolphin boat tailed full pan VW MOD-T Street Buggy |

Are you cleaning a case that you are rebuilding or just cleaning the motor in the car? A 50-50 mix of auto trans fluid and acetone will dissolve all greasy gunk and loosen any frozen nut. Brush or spray on gunk, let sit 15 min.s and scrape/wire brush off gunk. |

Guys, don´t know how it works in the rest of the world, but most of the engine degreasers, brake cleaners etc here in Sweden are completely worthless, instead it seems like being completely freed from all the effective substances as it once was, although still costing the same horrendous money and I just can´t get it what an idiot, state or organisation came up with this completely stupid idea, as now people are still polluting, if not more as the stuff doesn´t work so they are using yet more of it hopping it will, except for no purpose at all !!!
And yepp, no engine degreasers at the car wash in Sweden as 356 pre-A stated....
Anyone have experiance with steam?
Dennis

Steam works really well but remember to coat all steel fasteners with a light film of oil (WD40 repels water) to prevent rust. |

CRC Pro-Duty degreaser works really well for cleaning, rinses with tap water and leaves no residue and has no lingering odor:

If you have "Simple Green" soak it in that undeluted, it takes a while but also works well. |
