Picking up a Corvair reverse rotation engine for our Manx Clone. How well will our swing axle hold up to it? Will do mainly off-road exploring where we live. No flogging it! _________________ 2 fiberglass buggies, 2 non-running Corvair Sandrails!

Depends how you drive. I have a friend with a 65 Beetle that has a 2276cc in it and it has the stock swing tranny.
I've broken a stock SSC IRS tranny with a stock 1600.
And then i've broken the spider gears on a built IRS with a Super Diff and a 2180. But I drive it like I stole it.

No flogging this buggy. A German Shepherd rides in the back and she goes every where with us! _________________ 2 fiberglass buggies, 2 non-running Corvair Sandrails!

Years ago, I had a modified 140hp Corvair engine in my 55 Bug. I flipped the ring gear, installed Super Diff and close ratio gears. No Problem, even with slicks.
JMO, methinks a stock tranny would live, if driven normally. |

I ran a RR Corvair with 140hp heads (and later a turbo) in a sandrail and DID flog it. I had no problems with the tranny but a stock PP didn't hold, I had to go to a 1700lb KEP plate.
Make sure you have a good air filter setup (not K&N) if you want your motor to last. Tubs tend to cloud the engine with road dirt shortening engine life. _________________ '66 Deluxe Bus

Checking for decent R&P mesh will be the most critical aspect of this ring gear flip. With reverse rotation, the coast flank becomes the drive flank. _________________ aka Pablo, Geary

Not with a reverse rotation kit. The Corvair engine normally turns c/cw. With the kit it now turns the same as a vw. _________________ There are no stupid questions, only stupid people,
