Howdy all,

I see in my VW dealership parts manual published about 1972 that there is a support stand for the air cleaner, and that apparently there are "two" different versions. My 1970 Ghia engine compartment had it's stock air cleaner stand (right side of the engine compartment) removed long, long ago for installation of a 1776 engine with a pair of Weber 44IDF plus XE carbs (long gone). I'm getting things together to get the original factory engine returned to the Ghia's engine compartment. Here are the two listings in the parts book:

141 129 645A bracket - air cleaner, up to chassis #147 999 000 (end of 1967 model). I'm guessing this remote stand started on Ghia's around 1964 or 1965?

211 813 503A bracket - air cleaner, from chassis #148 000 001 (1968 model) thru 1974 K. Ghias (looks like this was also used on Buses too - 1968 - 1971? Bay windows?)

I have a air cleaner stand here...

...and I'm wondering which version I have now that there seems to be two types. Can anyone shed light or point me to an existing thread about this? Is it some tiny subtle difference or are these two stands completely and obviously different? Thanks for any guidance, photos, info you can add here!

Bill

What you have pictured there is the later bracket.

The early bracket is fastened with 4 bolts and has a harder right angle to the mounting surface. The later bracket is welded in place (I think!?) and has a more curved transition to the mounting surface.

Yep. And the later version has folded edges to stiffen the thinner material it is made from.

Awesome guys! I knew some of you Ghia experts would come through with the details. So it is the "later" style (not sure when earlier ended and later started) but I now know that what I have in hand is correct to eventually fix my old 1970 Ghia Coupe (which I've owned and enjoyed since 1974). Yes, it is/was spot-welded to the engine compartment on the right side. Since I have the engine that my Ghia left the factory with all rebuilt and standing by on a shelf, I may soon remove the 1776 and prep the Ghia to receive her original "heart". Thank you for the info!

Hi, Bill! '64 and '65 Ghias did not yet have the AC stand. Their AC was still the all-metal style with the end pod like a Bus, which went off to the left of the carburetor. The long arm was held in place to the fan shroud with a triangular support that used the two ignition coil mounting holes. The "early" AC stand nicely shown above started with the '66 and the 1300 engine.
