I have been searching high and low for information on this both on the Samba and internet. I am in the process of installing a 1.6TD from a VW Quantum into my 1982 Westy, replacing the 1.6 NA. I want to put in a new/reman gear reduction starter using the original diesel bellhousing and flywheel. All the information I have looked at has left me confused. Could someone let me know the best way to go to get a starter that works in a clear and concise manner?

You can't use a starter from any other VW car.
You need the later version of the Diesel Vanagon starter.
You can try to buy a genuine Bosch Rebuilt SR28X and look at it before accepting it. It will be either the newer smaller gear reduction type you want or the huge original direct drive type you don't want.
Either version could be in the same Bosch box with the same Bosch number.

Another option is to buy a brand new Chinese made copy, for much less $.

https://www.amazon.com/DB-Electrical-SBO0083-Start...68+starter

Also you can buy a rebuilt Bosch made one but not rebuilt by Bosch.
https://www.amazon.com/Quality-Built-17068-Premium...automotive

The aftermarket number for the starter you want is 17068 or 17068N

Thanks for the reply. Looking at the pictures of the EBay and Amazon starters they look like direct drive. not gear reduction. ???

No, the photos are all gear reduction types.

The 2 new ones say PMGR in descriptions.

Permanent Magnet Gear Reduction

If you can find an adapter, the TDI starter is a good choice (geared).

I used the OE Bosch Diesel Starter on my TDI engine with the Diesel Bell Housing for a couple of years (about 50k miles). It cranked the TDI engine just fine.

But, someone (and I cannot remember who) PMed me with an adapter for sale that fit the Diesel Bell Housing perfect. Slapped it on with a TDI starter... lots of torque and quick starts.

I did set-up a Relay on the fire wall in the engine bay to the Solenoid. There was just too much current drop from the ignition to the Solenoid for it to kick-in every time. And, I did have the same sort of issue with the OE Bosch starter.

Here is a pic...

The TDI starter was a junk yard pick for cheap. Cleaned it up and it works fine.

Will your adapter work with the Diesel Bell Housing?

No, we've gone over this before.
