I have a round thin spring left over when reinstalling the bearing cover on the back of my bug. I was curious as to where it goes? does it fit inside the seal itself? its a little too big to fit inside the seal circumference wise. |

It's part of the seal ring, colored yellow in the cut-away below.

It is the spring that is installed in the seal, which exerts pressure from the inside of the seal, forcing the rubber lip, of the seal, to stay in contact with the rotating mass that is turning. If you look at a new seal, you can see it easily.
To keep that spring in place during installation, most mechanics apply a small layer of thick grease, wheel bearing grease works, in the backside void of the seal. That way as one installs the seal, the shocks from the hammer does not accidentally knock the spring off.
Without the spring, oil will spill out of the seal. Sorry man. _________________ Jimbo

ring of spring goes in the oil seal. if everything it is already installed, you'll need to pull it apart to gain access to the inside of the seal, and install the ring spring.
good luck, Bug On! With a Spring in your step! _________________ Help Prevent VW Engine Fires, see this link.....Engine safety wire information

Easiest way to r move seal is to came in behind it and tap it out with a screw driver? Can’t pull it out the front as it is stuck in. |
