The next piece in the metal puzzle to work on is the decklid. I have always felt VW kind of robbed ragtop buyers from the louvered decklid, that was offered on convertibles. In my opinion ragtops should have came with a louvered lid.
Anyone who has been following the thread, I need your help to source some louvers. The louvers on I believe 68-70 decklids will work as they are the same size as the early decklid louvers. Also I would like to find a split/oval rain tray as I feel this was the best design VW made. If anyone has or can get my hands on these items PM me. I will show this conversion here.
So, the decklid was actually in pretty good shape. There is some metal bumping to be done under the latch tray but other than that not bad. I do want to take everything apart to re-spot weld especially the hinge latches as these are notorious for breaking and then remove all rust and paint all hidden areas with rust preventive paint.
WANTED: LOUVERS & SPLIT/OVAL RAIN TRAY PM ME
Little side note, picked up a much overdue and need tool.

Little update on the decklid. Still looking for some louvers if someone can help out? Just been going about doing some rust prevention and also re-attached bottom plate. This decklid was pretty straight so not much hammer and dolly work. Did run it real fast through the English wheel with the rubber wheel.

Taking a break from the decklid, I decided to finish off these little 1962 only bits.
I had sourced these awhile back from a samba member in Germany.
After sand blasting them they did need a little cleaning up. Made sure to weld through prime them. Then located them to the new pan using the OG pan I had sitting aside.
On side note, also welded in the pedal bracket.
Thanks keep posted

Nice work! Nothing better than a spot welder
Really good to see those heater outlets finding use again!
For the oval louvres check out the CSP website, they sell them for 136€ a pair

While I wait on some metal to complete the decklid, I thought I would get started on the doors. The bottoms are toast on the OG doors. I picked up the metal to repair both the lower inner and outer metal from a European dealer.
I have seen that some decide to glue the outer door skin to avoid warping. I plan to weld the outer door skin in. That being said warping will be a problem if not prevented, I made some tooling to keep the skins natural contour.
The passenger door also had some PO hackery:
I first started by removing the rusty metal. Then located both the inner and outer panels. Then blasted new metal clean and decided to weld the inner structure first.
Still need to grind my welds. Keep posted for the outer skin and thanks for checking out the thread. _________________ 1961 Type 1

Just tuning in. Love your build. I have 2 questions for you.
1. What are those little tabs that you’re using with the cleco clips? The copper/brass ones that you use to hold the 2 panels together for butt welding.
2. Early on in your build when you were doing the cross members and heater channels how did you connect the channel to the cross member?
In one of your photos it looks like you have the channel sitting on top of the cross member, like my photo above, and another looks like you have the HC bottom plate under the CM. In order to have the bottom plate under the CM the CM would need to be notched right?
Thanks for help! |

Nickgreen949, thanks for the great questions. For your first question the clips in the photo a friend and I made with his CNC. There is a hot rod shop outta Santa Rosa that sells them. The name slips my mind at the moment.
For your second question, you need to drill the first couple spot welds from the end of the heater channel bottom plate. The cross member then slips in between that seam and is welded.
Thank you, and keep watching the thread. _________________ 1961 Type 1

Back to the door skin work. Defintly a tricky area to work.
After welding, grinded the weld. This is the most important part to get just right.
In the next photos you will notice shiny areas near the seam, his is where I leaded the seam. Sorry, no photos of the lead work but leading is a delicate process that needs full attention on the work.
Quick test fit, Im happy with how lines and seams are looking.

Really enjoying your progress, you are getting those problem areas worked out nicely!!
Will be a great feeling knowing all those rust areas are good as new, & protected to live a long time.
I’m starting a 66 project thats body is real solid (California car), put still needs some areas worked. So this is inspiring, keep it up!

Awesome work! I have been following this thread with interest as i have more or less the same repairs to do on my -59, and your thread is for sure a great inspiration!
Since you clearly have much greater skill with sheet metal than me, i have a question; i have been repairing the fender mountings/bolt holes on the rear of mine, and i made a patch with the correct weldnut, i tried to stay as far away from the bodyline/crease as possible when cutting out the rusted sheet metal, but when welding in the new patch it wants to suck the bodyline with it when the welds cool, even though i am making quick spotwelds (MIG) and jumping around to not introduce too much heat. And that area is impossible to get to from behind to dolly it back out, or planish welds as i go. I have tried to use a slide hammer to get it back out, but i am having limited success.
What is your best advise regarding these issues? Should i get it as close as possible and accept some distortion and lead/bondo the crease back to shape, it doesnt feel right though, or is there a better way to control distortion?
Thank you! |

Tobias Bylund, distortion is always a problem with these VW’s and the gauge of metal. It sounds to me like your taking the usual precautions. It’s always hard with a panel you cannot access from the back. If you have a stud welder this can help, be careful and practice first as you don’t wanna volcano stretch areas either.
Play around with your heat and wire speed. This is vital. Also try hitting each spot with air after each spot. Sheet metal work is hard. Very hard, it’s an art and takes hours of practice.
Thank you for the great question and keep checking back. _________________ 1961 Type 1
