I have serious trouble installing new windshield to my 1970 bug with aluminium trim. Old seal was leaking. I thought it would be one job among others. How wrong I was.
We tried to install this windshield many times with my father. Finally I bought another seal, wevib made, but no luck. Always the same thing, working towards the top there is not enough lip to seat over the body flange. At best it sits but just barely on the flange edge, working towards center lip falls back out. Inner roof upholstery may worsen the situation. Pushing and manipulating the glass doesn't help any. Also this lip seems very low on the Vw type seals and it takes lot of force just to install the cord in between.
Bottom and sides seems to fit ok, but top never. I can put easily chrome trim into seals but this is different.

I have installed these type of glass before and never had this kind of huge loss of time and effort in very basic task.
At the time it is winter so I'm not able to take it anywhere to complete the job.
Any thoughts or advices?

Did you compare the old windshield with the new windshield?

Yes I did. I found them to be almost the same. Slight difference was in bottom corner radius, but it was so small that I can't believe it would be any cause.
I measured especially the height and found no difference.

I don't think the seal should be as firm as you say it is. I would get another seal from another vendor. Maybe the chrome insert is too big.

You gotta smack the windshield with the palm of your hand to seat it as you pull the rope around the seal.

This ^^^- until your hand is sore. Might take 40-50 smacks. You are creating a shock to the glass with each smack that allows the seal to seat where it needs to. If you get lazy and just press against the glass it will often break.

Don't be shy about (light) soapy water either. Use a full spray bottle with a drop of dish soap in warm water. Make sure your shop is warm and the seal is plenty pliable.

This video really helps. I used weed whacker wire and dry lube by pb blaster.
Both are available at Home Depot.

It may help to have a second helper concentrate on holding the top of the glass in against the hole as you pull the rope, the way it lays on the top of the cowl wants to lift the windshield as the bottom seats in instead of deforming or rolling the bottom of the seal outward onto the cowl. Once it escapes from the body hole there's little you can do to get it back in aside from starting over. Another trick to try is start with the rope overlap at the top and work your way around so you finish at the bottom.

I've always started at the top (middle, of course), finished middle-bottom. I've only done about 7 or 8 cars over the years, but 100% success rate with no breaks.

Maybe it has something to do with the greater (gentler) radius up top being seated first, then the tight (bottom) corners last...not sure.

If you see the old factory videos they have a guy on the outside smacking the window with a rubber mallet as the guy inside pulls the cord out around the seal. Surprisingly violent.

Yeah but how do you get the windshield OUT without breaking it? Iv'e tried twice and both times crraacckk.

Rear window has never been a problem.

I cut the window seals with a razor blade. Window pops out on its own when you are done. I figure a new seal is cheaper then a new window.

Also, if your car has those dreaded metal clips - remove them before trying to install the new windshield. Ask me how I know.

Thanks for everyone, who shared their own point of views!

We, (me and 2 helping persons) got the window finally fitted last sunday.
I used silicon spray, before only soap water. It was really hard to hold it place and but the seal lip raised up very smoothly now after spraying silicon.
One person was holding other upper corner and second person pushing the glass exactly where I pulled the cord.
It was a big relief to have it finally in place after all this battle and many failed attempts!

I'm going to do both rear sides too, because they have faded plastic trim. I change them to AL trim with new seals. I think they will go lot easier as those are so much smaller windows.

This. I recently did a rear window on my Super Beetle. Definitely helped to have my son assist. Also, I was Leary of smacking the glass, but I did and it seated perfectly.

Be glad it wasn't a SB Convert. as they are a real MF, push and smack all you want and the top gives, it took a week and all the pillows and couch cushions in the house, placed around the rear to catch the glass when it flies out at the last min. incase you can't catch it, NEVER AGAIN.
