Hi everyone, I’m installing Weber 40IDFs into my Type 4 engine today. What do I need to do with the oil breather box as far as connecting it, or not connecting it to my carbs. I bought them through aircooled.net so I was under the assumption that they were equipped with everything I need for install.

Thanks!

If the breather connects to ANYthing, it would be the charcoal filter cannister.

HuH?, the charcoal canister is for gas tank fumes only, oil and water from the crankcase will plug it in hours.

Most people connect thier crankcase breather to the air cleaner lid or base.

If the carbs are from China the 1st thing is to remove the tops and look for shavings/other crud and maybe blow out the passages.

Fortunately these are Spanish Webers so we are clear of Chinese junk.

Busdaddy that’s what the Kadrons I took off did. So I should drill and tap a hole in my air cleaner base for it? What exactly does the oil breather do, and do I NEED it for a few days of driving before I have the means to machine my air cleaner bases?

The breather allows combustion gases, water condensation and oil mist to get out of the crankcase, it also breathes in air when the engine cools. You can run it a couple days with the hose aimed overboard, but the longer you leave it the more oil mist goes through the fan to make a place for dust to stick in the cooling system.

Thanks for the knowledge! Is it really not bad for the engine to draw oil mist through the carbs??

Positive crankcase ventilation has probably done more to increase engine life than any other automotive improvement over the last 60 years. Had lead not been taken out of the fuel and crankcase ventilation improved modern high output engines just would not be possible.

Adding improved crankcase ventilation to vehicles also made roads much safer, especially in the rain. Draft tubes used leave a nasty oily strip down the middle of each lane which when wet could give severely reduce traction.

It is important that the hose(s)s between the breather and the air filter(s) have sufficient slope so that any engine snot that forms in them will drain back into the engine.

either run it to the top of one or both carbs, or into a catch can. Either you will oil up the inside of the carbs or the engine bay, take your pick.

If it gets into the engine bay it will also get in the heat exchangers, fouling up your heating system.

I’ve got several pictures to illustrate to you how to do this. Problem is right now I’m so fucking sore from my garage today that I don’t want to get off my ass at the moment and go to my desktop computer. Maybe in the morning.

Basically run a hose from you breather box to the right side carb lid which you’ll install a fitting into

Thanks everyone, you’re the best source of info. Any reason why the right carb is used for the breather?

Gary thanks a ton for those photos they helped a lot! I drill/tap holes early this week.

I got through most of the installation today but my old fuel fittings aren’t compatible with the Weber fitting threads so tomorrow will be coming up with new fuel delivery from the firewall back, and then setting up the linkage and tuning the carbs. I can’t wait to feel how much better my bus runs!

Pertronix SVDA distributor and coil coming later in the week!
