How does this sound Eric and Barb combo?

Possible, but hard to say for sure. Bad grounds can cause such crazy things to happen.

I was re-grinding grounds in my garage because this exact event happened- a faint glow as the filaments tried to seek earth. I never messed with the M/C switch- but you are absolutely right- crazy stuff happens due to poor grounds. It can become a "bop the squirrel" game really quickly.

This is to serve as an update, but here's what it turned out to be: I took the bug to a reputable VW shop. They found a lead from the wiper motor shorting out. Also had to pull the steering wheel and clean out the turn signal switch from hair, dirt, and goo. Grounds were all good, as I thought. So, for $165 she's back on the road!
