We had our first snow driving experience in the Westy this weekend. I just had new Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7 studless tires put on last week, and wanted to see how they handled up the steep hillside drive to our daughter's place in the Methow Valley. I had to take it in first gear, with some slipping, but would not have made it without the new tires. I chained up the rears on the way down, which I should have done on the way up. There are two hairpin turns in the road, with steep drop offs on either side. Better safe than sorry Smile I didn't want to see my Van upside down at the bottom of the hill.

I also recently installed the R8 pop top insulation from Fancher's, and it, combined with a small electric space heater, made it very comfortable sleeping with the top up. One day we'll get a Propex installed, but for now, if we can plug in, we're good for the cold weather camping.

Had a bunch of snow fall around Christmas. Surprisingly quiet inside with all that snow in the roof.

Last night we were forecast to get 3-4" of snow.

Well....... it "over performed" (weatherman talk for Ooops! )

9 3/4" fortunately I had mistrusted the forecast and put my plow on anyway.

Back in the mid'80's I used to drive up to Capitol Peak after the snow had accumulated in my '67 Split. The only other rigs up there at the time were Jeeps. Lovely vistas

The bitter cold has finally descended on Denver. My now 23-year tradition when it gets this nasty out is to whine that this is my last winter here and that I'm moving somewhere warm.

I'm from the swamp. I don't know how the true northern folks deal with prolonged winter.

Had a little (unusual) snow on the Lower Columbia River today:

Both Vanagons are in project mode: New cylinder head for beige Westy, reconstructing a partially fried wiring harness in the blue one:

When that is done, I am transferring the beating heart of my old Diesel Rabbit into the blue Vanagon, my Rabbit and I met a deer last fall and neither survived. I bought the Blue Vanagon with a bad engine and sold the Bunny for parts, keeping the engine.
But that can wait till the snow melts.

After decades of Virginia summers we always said we'd be willing to trade for cooler weather year-round, but after our winter blast this year we've revised that sentiment.

Short trip today. Drove as fare as I could, but the road was only used by tractors pulling lumber wich made deep tracks in the middle of the road and when i slided in to them it was very hard to get out of it agian.

Ha! I knew somebody would chime in! In any case, it's eight degrees here and that bums me out.

I get it. I've lived in Vermont and Colorado, so I know what prolonged COLD cold feels like and what it can do to vehicles, animals and humans, and I know about mud season when it finally arrives. We don't normally get zero-and-below temps here so it's a revelation when it occurs. Just ask my woodpile.
