Does it look original?.... or like a previous owner changed it?
Any evidence on the sides or top of opening, where striker plate / chains could have been?
Can you post some pics? _________________ aka: Evan

what country is it from?
In germany there were several different types of vehicles that looked like ambulances.
some of them were used for seated patient transport. No need for a stretcher and thus no need for a slide out hatch in the rear.
With a window in the hatch you would not be hinging it at the bottom.
think Johanniter, Katastrophensschutz Wagen, Arbeiter Samariter, etc in Germany. They are all painted like ambulances, but many just have seats inside. _________________ regards

It does look like a 1958 Ambulance but with a regular rear hatch door.
The engine is later - a '59 would have a 36hp engine but that's probably a 40hp.
The rear bumper is 59-up style too
It looks like a 58-down pressed front bumper (thinner) but with a Beetle bumper attached to it? Or maybe the Bug bumper is just sitting there. _________________ How to Post Photos

Can you remove the loose Beetle bumper en make pictures of this detail?
The tree has grown behind the bus bumper?

Same here. Patient Transfer Service Ambulances. 'Ambulance' doesn't have to mean an emergency vehicle. The word derives from the latin word for walk (i.e. ambulances are a way of moving people around). _________________ Andy

Thanks for the responses. Where is the ID tag located on this bus? Is the gasoline heater a rare option? Is a bus in this condition a good start for a restoration? It has been sitting in the woods since 1984 which allowed the tree to grow around the bumper and anchor it to the ground. The Bug bumper and the Bus bumper are actually inside the tree. The engine will turn. |

The VIN plate is up to the right of the engine:
The gasoline heater is uncommon but they are out there...
They were often standard in Ambulances.
It's hard to tell how rusty it is from those pics.
You need to see underneath and see the floors under all the debris.
Anything can be fixed but it could be really expensive.
Does it have an ambulance fan up front too?
There will be a switch on the overhead vent above front dashboard
Example:

I have not looked at the ID plate yet. It could be a 1959 instead of a 58. How can you tell if the engine is 40 or 36 HP? Also it looks like it had a sliding window dividing the front seat from the back area. |

'58 ambulance used all black upholstery and has a nurse's jump seat that drops into a steel pocket (like you have).
'59 ambulance used white piping on the nurse's jump seat and went to a different style of nurse's jump seat (that hangs on the bulkhead).
The lower right of this pic shows the '59-mid 60's nurse's jump seat.
40 hp used an alternator stand that bolts to the case (like you have).
36 hp used an alternator stand that was integral with the case (like in the VIN pic Everett posted).
You don't have the original 36 hp engine it left the factory with.
'58 didn't have the crescent in the rear hatch at the T-handle... it's been changed to a later rear hatch.

I thought gas heaters were standard equipment on ambulances, fairly unusual in other models. It is a very cool option, and that particular Eberspacher version is a good one.
The bus in not in the best condition, but most project buses are fairly poor condition, and it is a ambulance, has a bunch of options, and looks pressed bumper era. Can't really see rust condition from the pics though. If you are wondering what to pay for it as is, where is, it is worth something, but not a lot.
I'm really impressed by the tree.
Once you cut the tree out of the way, do not pull by the bumper. Pull by the beam.
Wrap the rope around that big round tube on top of the chunk of wood in this pic: |

It is clear that... that tree HAS GOT TO GO!!! Lots of cool and rare ambulance goodies there, and the Bus is savable, just a matter of money, time and labor. But someone will have a cool old Ambulance in the end. I'm betting that you could eventually locate a correct hinge-at-the-bottom Ambulance rear hatch and put it back correct... A correct 36hp engine shouldn't be too hard to locate for that.

From the sounds of it, the current hatch is correct as it was a 'patient transfer service ambulance' model, not an emergency service ambulance. Either way a cool find, definitely worth saving. _________________ RPM=(MPH*336* (R&P*4th*1.26))/Tire Diameter in inches |

Thanks again for all the responses. I am learning more from each response and appreciate it. To me the tree is a special attraction! I have the tree cut and am leaving the chunk between the bumper and fender until I get it home. and I have put on good used tires and just about have it ready to pull from the woods. |
