I need a sliding door side step for this Ď71 bus Iím working on. The question is are some better than others? Are NOS ones available or should I just buy the cheapest I can find online? I hear they were a dealer option so thatís why Iím asking. TIA

There's a few different styles, some have cast aluminum end brackets (most current repos), later OG VWOA versions were bent up square steel bar.
The cast ones snap off when you clip a curb and one end grinds on the raod all the way home, the bar version bends the sh*t out of the jack points, you decide what style of pain you want Wink

I wouldnít want to straighten out a jack point. Let the step be the mechanical fuse as it were....

Reading between the lines here. Iím guessing what youíre saying is that a side step is a bad idea?

The bus belongs to a Grandmother who wants to go camping with her grandkids. If you still think itís a bad idea Iíll let her know that.

We always just brought along a little stool when the kids were short, handy for other things once at the campsite as well as reaching stuff in the upper bunk inside the bus.

Side steps sound like a good idea, but in practice they create new challenges sometimes and are more of a PITA than they are worth, I wouldn't want to go off pavement anywhere with one.

Years ago I purchased a Bus Boys repro aluminum side step. It works great and find it awkward getting into the cargo area without it. Can't imagine my bus without it.

That said, I have broken both cast aluminum jack point mount brackets being really stupid on 2 separate off-road occasions. Fortunately some friends who are good at TIG welding repaired them.

If this is going to be used for an older driver that will never see off road stupid scenarios I would say that the repro's will be fine.

Second break after driving down a road that was really a dried up wash on the way to the Colorado River in AZ. The front part is being supported by a Coleman fuel can.

I had one on my '72 and wanted another for my current '73 that was exactly the same as my earlier one. Found one in the classifieds last week for a good price that I wanted, but after inquiring, seller said he didn't want to ship. I think it was in California so you may be able to pick it up.

I have a client with one. total pain in the ass to set up on the lift, and I 100% agree with busdaddy.

the other thing is they rattle without the spring to hold tension on them. they tend to collect shit and corrode into the jack points as well.

I find them to be a tripping hazard getting out of the bus. perhaps see if you can borrow one to see how much granny loves it.

Iíve only spent about an hour in person with her over the last 3 months that Iíve had her bus. From that Iíd just guess that you couldnít stay up with her.

Very Happy

I'm sure she's nice, and I mean no offence (I'm sure you know this)

it would be awkward eating dinner, having Bea Arthur pounding on my door looking to kick my ass. I'd have a lot of explaining to do Laughing
