Enough concentration to forget the torque pattern and cam bearings.... . I caught that he missed the lower middle bolt too Brian. |
Stage fright. Maybe he's right... he should teach rather than perform.

So who else watched it long enough to see me forget the right side cam bearings???
And the torque pattern I forgot didn’t end up mattering, since I had to split the case again anyways
I hope you guys had fun, I’m turning in for the night.

Ha!! I actually forgot and remembered as I was installing the main bearing hardware. I think that’s two of you that caught that! Nice.
Right now, I only have four extra nuts and washers. Once the oil pump is in, I’ll have no leftover parts!
And I’ll cheers to that!

I hope that distributor is only in there for the build. I installed one of those several years ago and after about a year it went wacky.
Then I got one of these

Spend a little extra time fitting the oil pump. Use a good straightedge to verify the gears are flush with the pump body. If the gears are slightly low, figure 8 sand the assembly with fine wet-or-dry sandpaper on a sheet of glass (for flatness) until they are flush. Check the cover for flatness; sand on glass like above as needed. Then use the thinnest cover gasket you can find. The idea is to have the gear to cover clearance as close as possible without binding. [Note: because the gears are steel and the body is aluminum, this clearance will increase with temperature.] If you want it even better, radius the hole edges where the oil enters and leaves the gear area of the pump with a burr on a Dremel tool. This helps the oil flow to the gears better. Install the cleaned pump body into the case (don't forget the body gasket), then check the drive gear tang fit into the cam. Compare the fit with the shaft engaged and at 90 degrees out (use a spare cam to get an idea of what it should be). The shaft can be pressed into or out of the drive gear to optimize this fit. Again, you want as much engagement with the cam as possible, without binding.
These little details let the pump prime instantly, and make a big difference on really hot days when you're pushing the engine to its limits.

Next time, leave the distributor and drive gear out until the case is built and the final end play adjusted. You'll get better results and you won't be hammering on things. Great job but the title is wrong - it should be "Creative Abstract Painting with Curil."
Yes Tram is right - that distributor is upside down if you plan on milking it into a bucket. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

Hey Gary, you are correct. The current distributor is in my engine soaking up daily driver duties. I used it to measure the drive gear end play, and stuck it back in my bus. This is the CB Performance fully programmable unit though, not the Pertronix knock-off.
SGKent- I'll keep that in mind, thanks. It's always a little too hair-raising when I do the drive gear job with the washers on the screwdriver, but I've done that on running engines! Plus, this way is easier to get the pinion out if I mess up. Which I would never do……
Telford, I made the pump and cover plate glossy with my progressive flat sanding four years ago. When I had it apart in Colorado, there was some noticeable pump gear patterns on the cover plate. I rotated the plate 90° and said "I'll deal with it late." Well, it's almost 'later!' Thanks for the tips; I've never thought about chamfering the oil flow towards the gears.
Abscate, I'd pursue that line of work.
Jason, thanks for being the Chat MVP last night. After I shut it down I became the Beer MVP.

That must have been exciting. It's hard enough to do on a stopped engine. How did you keep the distributor in time with the engine?

We should only live so long...
Seriously, I've noticed on a couple engines that those two washers are larger in diameter than the tooth base of the gear. This means that if you install the shaft with the washers on, the washers hit the helical drive gear on the crank. Not good. Might explain the need to hammer? Because of this, I've always used the screwdriver method, even with an open case install. Might check this on the next engine... _________________ '71 panel, now with FI

you held a pair of snap ring pliers last night. Use those and turn the gear a little as you take it out - it slips in and out very easy. Use grease on the shims. Drop them onto the gear seat using a long screwdriver, rod etc. Then slide the gear in. If it is off a tooth, lift it with your snap ring pliers just until it is free and turn it. The tail will still be lower than the shims. I save that step for the very last one after the engine is completely assembled. Otherwise on a new engine one day you will get a false reading on the flywheel, or damage the brass gear when flywheel is off and the crank moves too far and binds the brass gear. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |
