with the damp climate and copious use of salt in winter means that solid original cars are at a premium in the UK...but do those joins at the top of the rear valence look right, they seem a bit wavy to me? |

Nice score if I could get my hands on it that is. A right hand drive Sunbug sorta clone. In the trunk area you see that plate riveted to lip there. That is your production plate. It tells you the year, week and day it came down the line. You can decode it just read this page.

Update for you all...
I went back to see the Beetle with the same friend, who has done a meticulous restoration of a 1930's Austin but was really keen to get an air-cooled VW.
We basically agreed that, if the engine would turn over manually, he would do a deal on that basis and the end result was that he bought the car!
I'm really delighted for the buyer, and I know he will do a fantastic restoration/preservation job (expect a new username on TS sometime soon!) and the seller was really happy that the car is not going to be flipped and is going to a good home.
I'm also looking forward to helping out with advice and practical help on the resto and seeing the car once it regains its former glory!!
Thanks to all for the helpful and supportive comments! _________________ 1978 marino yellow Bay Dormobile camper

Oops! I just wanted to know if I was close to the $5000 dollar equivalent of the Scotish version pound sterling. That was what I had guessed the car would bring.
Since no one knows who bought the car, I didn't think the price would matter. Sorry about that.

Did the later bugs come without the dash pad in the UK? Or was it removed? The thing I think I dislike the most on (US bugs?) is a dash pad. That looks MUCH better.
Did it come with a 1300? We only got that one year 1966. But I've heard that the 1300 (and 1200) for that matter were made for many years that side of the pond. |

Sorry, hitest, but I am sworn to secrecy. I may sometimes fail when working on my bug, but I can keep a secret.
The new owner may divulge what he paid if, and when, he starts his own resurrection thread on the Samba. Until then, I won't PM anyone on the subject.
Sorry.
P.s. I do hope the new owner makes a thread here. I'm very curious as to how much work he has ahead of him. Here's hoping he got lucky .

Prune, that dash looks too good to be other than stock. In fact, it looks new.

A little bit of an update here, while my friend gets the hang of the new and exciting world that is TheSamba and air cooled VWs in general!
He is making steady but cautious progress, having taken the beetle on a recovery truck to a heated (!) garage (no less) in an undisclosed location in rural Scotland. The tyres held air, and the stuck handbrake came free with a gentle (!) hammer tap...
The engine hasn't even had an attempt at starting yet, as he is planning oil change, valve adjustment, flushing the fuel tank and cranking over without a spark first. This guy is meticulous, and will be a great owner to the car!
No time to clean much of the paintwork yet, but it's going to look great! The roof and engine lid were carefully cleaned though, before a cover went over. Hubcaps cleaned up nicely too!
You can be sure if (when!) a thread gets started I'll link to it here!

A short update, and a question for the Samba experts...
My friend has done a bit of an engine service and finally bitten the bullet and turned the key! The engine started easily and sounded pretty sweet but progress is on hold thanks to the wintery weather at the moment. The brake pedal is pressing straight to the floor, so a master cylinder rebuild might be on the cards before the car is driven anywhere.
The question is; does anyone have reference pictures for what a pristine 1974 engine bay would have looked like, coming from the factory. This engine is very original, but it would be good to have documentation of things like the fuel lines and clamps, heater air hoses and clamps, vacuum hoses and colours etc etc. I have searched fairly hard in the gallery and online, but this is the best I have so far!
Any contributions gratefully received!

Here’s my 1974. It’s pretty close to original.
