Got tired of fighting with my turn signal so I decided to remove it and do a little tune up. Put a little electrial lube on the contacts and then greased the moving parts. This probably hasn't been done since the 50s! Works like a new car now...smooth as butter.
Also, when removing the signal housing I noticed the SWF and HLS 2/51 stamping. My bus has a February birth date but obviously not a '51. Does this actually mean a barndoor date or something else?

Got a delivery today. Mid 56 speedo...Will do just fine in 57 Kombi.

you do good work. nice to see another home-builder figuring things out on the fly. I have swapped roofs between split buses in a driveway before, now I have a 60 ragtop build thread on here that Im doing with my boy. We just picked up a '59 Kombi that we will start after the Bug.
Im in Socal too, judging by the houses in your pictures we might be local. I was going to offer help, but you don't seem to need any.
Keep up the great work! Maybe I will see you at some shows, isn't WW parking lot swap coming up in April? |

Thanks! I live about 10 miles from WW and plan on attending the Springfling (4/14) again this year. I have had a blast restoring mine and I'm kind of bummed out I am running out of things to do but something always pops up. Where did you score the 59 Kombi? I always have my eyes peeled for buses but haven't seen any yet. Where are you located?

I found it on here in the classifieds. We drove to Flagstaff AZ on Presidents Day weekend and towed it home. It was advertised as a ‘58 but I had “The Book” with me (specifications guide). It is an early ‘59 with high tail lights, made on Nov 11th....just a few days into 59 model year production.
I am in Rancho Cucamonga, I go by WW all the time. In fact, I will be there tomorrow visiting with Rich around 9 or 10, picking up my sons ragtop for the ‘60 Bug. I’m sure I will see you around.

In the process of rehabbing my “new” speedo. Any know the color order of the gels? I read somewhere that they are dependent upon year.

Top: Red
Bottom: Red/Blue/Green
The top turn signal indicator changed to Green later (1962 models)
You can see the colors mentioned in the owner manual for your year too.

Took the speedo apart. It may have been rebuilt at some time becuase it was in really good shape.
Parts.
Marked the pre-load. Noticed the small "3" at the bottom of the faceplate. Not sure what that means but thought it was interesting.
Rolled back the odometer by pulling the pin and lifting the pin/gears just high enough to roll back the mileage to what I needed to show, lined the gears back up and pressed the pin back in. Cleaned and greased the gears, reused the turn signal white do-hickey thing. Purchased a great looking new clear needle from The Speedo King (310)791-8436...I highly recommend him!!
