Cleaning out getting ready for a major move.
The "your kids don't want your crap!" Clean up.

Up in the attic I have a pair of Stale Air Heater boxes.

Not new, but used in VERY good shape.

They lack the square box on top and the best I can figure is that they are 36 hp but probably the newer 1958-1960 style. They are all folded metal without any screws holding the halves together.

Can anyone verify this?

Memory tells me I got them for a 56 Beetle I once had many many many moons ago but they were incorrect.

Definitely 36hp. Stale air 40hp is a oval where the shoe box actually meets the heater box.

Thanks for the identification!
If I understand correctly, while NOT the correct boxes for earlier engines, they will fit engines back to about 1950?

A few more photos, I pulled out its mate. I examined closely and cannot find any stamped numbers at all.
I'm guessing they were simply labeled with stickers?

These still have black paint inside the boxes and on the flap rods!

They fit earlier engines but they won't hook up to the heater flaps as those are different too.

Yes, they didn't have part #s stamped on them - I've seen NOS ones with a part # sticker on them, which would have burned off.
I don't think originals had anything on them.
They usually have a VW stamp on them somewhere.

The earliest version of this style heater box was held together with slotted, hex-head screws.
