Hi all
Need some advise on how to remove the Y tubes with insulation on (think its a muffler for the sound or something) that connect to the heater channels that are in the rear footwell as i need to access the pan underneath to restore it ??
Thanks |

I'm assuming you mean these:
They are just friction fit on the rear part and have one screw/bolt on the part that connects to the heater channel (you can see the screw on the front part in this pic)
Be careful when taking these Y's off. The rear portion that comes through the body into the passenger compartment (the 'snout' that the Y slides onto) is made of a heat-resistant plastic called "Bakelite". It's heat resistant but quite brittle. _________________ 1973 Standard Beetle

I've just done something very similar. I had to pull the Y tubes to replace the pans on my 78 and in the process I broke one of the Bakelite tubes. I advise you loosen the Bakelite tubes from underneath the car. Jack up the car and crawl underneath (with jack stands secure) and loosen/remove the two bolts that hold the tubes to the body of the car. The passenger side comes out easy. I could not remove the drivers side from the vehicle, but loosening the Bakelite tube gives you more wiggle room to get the Y tube out. In this case the extra step of loosening the Bakelite tubes when removing the Y tubes could save you $50 (each if you break the Bakelite) Good luck _________________ '78 Super Beetle Convertible
