I took inventory of the glass that was included with my bus over the weekend and unfortunately it looks like I am missing all of the vent windows, including the doors.
Question, are there any differences i should be aware of between the vent windows on bay window busses between 1968-1979?
Any tips on sourcing these other than the classifieds, are there good reproductions available?
Thanks! |
Wolfsburg West just started making the rear vent windows.

It's been awhile since I posted progress on the bus. I've turned my attention to the interior. Below are some pics of the work I did on the floor. The back compartment was charred by a fire years ago and the floor of the passenger area had some rust.
I decided to hit everything with the wire wheel, then Ospho and then brushed on Rustoleum.
I also found some rubber mats on craigslist, not the right year but they will definitely do for now.
Pics below!

Nice bus! What did you use to apply the Rustoleum? _________________ If you haven't bled on them, you haven't worked on them.

Little more work on the interior. I haven't been able to find replacement plastic air ducts for the door panels. I ended up doing a repair job with J-B Weld Plastic Bonder:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01IBOK7FE/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Not the prettiest but they are usable again. The J-B Weld Plastic Bonder dries strong and can even fill missing spots if you need to.

I did some finish work on the engine bay this weekend.
I decided to treat the bus to a new carburetor, wow what a difference it made on how the engine runs. I went with a rebuilt german carb from Volkzbitz. It totally lives up to the reviews.
http://www.volkzbitz.com/
I installed a fire proof heat shield on the engine compartment roof. this was recommended by a list member, worked great.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N342LIP/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I installed the Blazecut fire prevention hose as well, just for added protection.
And last but not least, I decided to create my own rear cargo rubber mat from one that I bought on Amazon, this took the most time, creating the template from scratch was a challenge but I think it came out OK.

Tim does great work on those original Solex carbs. Just like new when he's done.
You should consider getting a restored DVDA or SVDA that matches that carb vs. the 009. You'd like how much better your bus drives. The 009 and 34-3 carb is known to have flat spots or off idle hesitations. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

Looking good. I know a guy that does beautiful work on Distributors equal to Tim’s carb work. He might even have one for sale off the shelf. If not. You’ll have to wait until he’s done building mine

I'll definitely upgrade someday, need to get this bus out on the road first! Would you recommend the DVDA or SVDA for my setup? _________________ 71 Bay Window Bus

Depends on if you're a purist or not. A stock 1971 bay bus would have a 211905205Q mounted which was a DVDA distributor. They are awesome after a restoration. However, a restored German Bosch SVDA will work good as well as long as your carb is set up for it.
Here's my stock 71 engine with a 205Q mounted.

Quick question for the forum.
I'm finishing up my headliner and I was wondering if there is a place to source the edge trim that finishes the area on the A Pillar near the front doors. (Photos Below)
Also wondering if this trim is used on the B Pillar on the sliding door side?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, I couldn't find any info on these pieces.
Thanks.

I've been working on getting some of the finish work done on the bus. Headliner, interior panels, building out the doors, new stereo...
Photos below, we're getting close to the finish line!
We did a little rehab on the vent windows...
Installed the interior panels and the rear bench seat, we still need to get new covers on the seats but we're able to get out and have fun this summer before we do that...
I decided to eliminate the fresh air ducts from the front doors, my glue job just didn't work out. Also added speakers to the front door cards...
We've been taking the bus out on the weekends and really having great fun enjoying it! I took some photos below of the bus in the wild!
