Thanks for all you have taught us Brendan & others and I hope the lurkers will take the time to read the entire thread before they buy any bus. Nestbedding keep your eye on the prize as I bookmarked your thread and I'm looking forward for good news as it will come. When you get your money back buy your next bus from Brendan's company The Holy Grail Garage Wink

Ok, I just successfully uploaded a handful of the ugliest spot pics from my cell phone.

They are in my gallery if somebody could please post them in the thread here so everyone can get a look at the major hackage and straight dogshit work, that would be both great and appreciated.

I’m out at a work convention with my wife and can’t figure out how to do this all from my cell phone, especially after a few 805’s! I feel like a senior citizen with new technology.

... this all seems a bit nitpicky to me. If it passes as a 23 window, has the vin of a 23 window, the state recognises it as a 23 window, it looks like a 23 window, drives like a 23 window, and if the thing is well made and is reliable... fuck just drive the thing and be happy, because if or when you go to sell it, it'll pass as a 23 window samba. Who cares if it's rebuilt from metal that wasnt originally on a 23 window? All the other 23 windows that were originally 23 windows are all new metal anyways, aren't those also considered 23 windows? The only difference is that this bus, different metal was changed out. This is all just a pissing match, let a guy be happy with what his hard work earned him. Call that lawer back (or dont) and just be happy. It looks like a pretty nice restoration to me.

Sorry I am a bit late to the party, but this is quite a ridiculous comment. If he were to sell the vehicle in the future with the current knowledge he has now as a "23 window bus" he could have a serious lawsuit on his hands.

Furthermore, if you walk into a candy store and ask for a milk chocolate bar and they give you a white chocolate bar wrapped in the wrong wrapper and they knew about it, wouldn't you feel ripped off? Now imagine instead of losing out on that $1.25 candy bar, you lost out on at least $70,000 or more because you bought a fraudulent product. Welcome to the world of liars my friend, it's gonna be a rough ride.

I don't think is a good idea the posting of the chassis number of our busses.

In my opinion, a lot of people use this forum to know the chassis numbers of the most rare T1 and realize perfect clones with correct serial number. It is very easy to modify a brazilian 15 window in 23 using the VIN posted on thesamba or on vw-Mplate.com then ask a new certificate to VW museum.
Using the engine search of vw-Mplate, if you search 24/25 and My 59, you see the complete list of samba T1 produced in 1959. And you can do the same for each year and model.
In the past was a nice site but due to the crazy prices of samba bus, web site is a mine of information for scammers.

PAy attention...it is only a my opinion.

It's been shared a few places.

Since it's a fraud, $150K, and car-related, I woudn't be surprised if it picks up some more speed.

Thank you for the continued support and attention this is receiving. First let me address the comments about selling the vehicle. Im not a stupid criminal, like Santos Lagunas and the others involved in perpetrating this fraud; I’ve no intention of reselling a fake VIN vehicle nor lying to anyone. They kept saying it’s VIN verified which only means they were able to slip it by the overworked and undereducated DMV field office employee who did what I did: lifted the trunk lid, saw the number stamped there, and verified it. Dealer selling it, trusting the auction, I made the mistake of trusting people who hold licenses with the State of California. Will I prevail? Eventually. Do I know so so much more about buses? Hell yes! For now the bus is evidence and collecting dust in my garage. Who knows what happens next but for now, the dream of owning my favorite car of all time is just on hold longer. It WILL happen. And we will have a beer and a laugh over this at some point. Not yet.

That's the spirit! I don't know a lot about all this but it's great that, in the face of this evil, you're still dreaming of owning one. I know plenty of people who would be so distraught from this that they'd give up on the dream.

Are you sure your's is real? look at that "3" it doesn't look to be like the 3 vw used? different font. You may have another phony just like this one. see post below. Unless vw used two different fonts for the 3's.
I'm going to go look at an original paint vin and compare

A bigger case can be made that the "3", was changed from a "5". The bottom of the 3 is precisely the same as the bottom of the 5 and it is perfectly aligned up and down just as the 5 is. Then the top of the 3 slants over to the left. If this were a 3 stamp, then the bottom portion would be rotated as the top is. Can someone post an early VIN with a "3"?....I think this will help Joe. The factory was stamping thousands of cars and buses a day, and I am sure they had a mechanized stamping jig that was Not a dude with a ball peen hammer in one hand and a single stamp in the other.

There's a 3, 4 and 5 to compare here...

Ok it is confirmed vw did in fact use two different styles of three's. Looks to be in the 50's they used the flat top 3. So anyone know a date change for this or an overlapping period like the two 23 window vin's here. one is earlier than the other and the earlier one has a rounded top 3. And the butchered bus has a flat top.

Not sure of a date change but my August 58' Vin 377XXX has the flat top 3.

You know what I'm thinking? There was one wrecked bus with a total/ salvage title. There was another wrecked Bus that was wrecked years ago when these buses were under a grand so the owner just parked it and never reported it to insurance... maybe bought another Bus and took the good bits to get it running. It used to happen. Second Bus has a title and there was a rivet gun wedding.

Who knows- just another theory.

And it's funny... I buy cars on the Internet sight unseen a lot of times but most of them are cars that nobody is motivated to fake because they are just catching interest or they CAN'T be faked. Mercedes, for instance... the VIN number told you what chassis family, sedan, coupe, or convertible, left hand or right hand drive, fuel system, engine. Back in the 80s guys were taking W111 Coupes and turning them into Cabrios and getting away with it because nobody had Google to just look this shit up on a whim. The conversions were at least safe, though, because all the parts were still available from Mercedes and these "hackers" at least did it right. But still... in the 1980s Coupes were all over for $3995 but Cabrios would set you back 100 grand... in 1980s money.

I'm approaching this from the opposite angle... even if the VIN IS for a 1959 Deluxe, this is a completely unsafe and incorrect hack and still a fraud. It's still misrepresentation. I wouldn't have been able to get past semaphores on a U.S. Spec '59, no matter how much I loved and wanted it, but the logical lobe of my brain is an asshole like that. It comes down to if they can't pay attention to that little detail, what else didn't they pay attention to?

In this case... a lot.

OP, I read your post about seeing where this leads and seeing it through, then still getting your dream Bus one day. I commend you; that's exactly the right attitude. Don't let some shitbird steal your dreams.

Best of luck to you in this.
