For some reason I was drawn to the Stolen VW section of the gallery and I decided to see how many Type 3s have been stolen.
Eight pages of entries showed two Fastbacks and one Notchback have been stolen in the history of that gallery section.
Search parameters included the following keywords:
Type 3
Squareback
Fastback
Notchback
Type 34
Type 3 Ghia.
Fastbacks probably led the pack because everyone needs parts.

I browsed it when my daughter was in college looking for a squareback. one she looked at was stolen, contacted owner and sent him the link to the for sale ad. Reunited them, the guy selling had bought the car from the thief. luckily he still had his name and address

Yes, I would say that is the #1 place for it |
I think you have to take into consideration that there are more VW's in SoCal period...

More to do with population & the big VW following in SoCal. I see they are stealing 2 cars a day in little old Redding, CA my hometown!

Yes, I would say that is the #1 place for it |
I think you have to take into consideration that there are more VW's in SoCal period... |
Yes, you could fall into the trap of misleading statistics where a raw count might seem high but the percentage could be less than somewhere else because S. CA is full of VWs.
You should expect the # of thefts to be higher in S. CA.

I'm surprised there aren't more thefts in Portland Or. and Seattle than we see.

The statistics tell me something totally different. More VW's of all types are stolen in CA.
This tells me one of two things....
1. that California people are thieves and cannot be trusted...or
2...that Its quite possible that the state of California is doing the stealing....possibly as a radical new experiment to get older vehicles off the road.....and with the states history of theft from its own people....
Yep!...one can do anything with statistics!
