I have purchased new white tires for replacements on a Dinky Karmann Ghia, (in fact I seem to have a lot of spares if anyone needs)-----so maybe that is what you have going on.

I have not seen the white tires used on the original Dinky Toys Oval VW Question Question

Dinky Toys did use the white wires on other toys in their product line,
but on the Oval VWs . . . not sure.

Later model beetles had spun hubs with white tyres similar to Ghias also the box was different to earlier ones it was lighter yellow

Have you got a picture of the base as the font got larger with later models

Hello Zen,

The Baron sent me over here to talk Turkey on the Dinky 181, one of my FAVORITE vintage VW toys.

What you have is a 1962/63 era 181 in shiny light blue with rare casted wheels.
The tires are "Big M" molded white rubber tires 100% original for the era of those two years, they made the toy in shiny light blue and RAF blue, both with cast or spun aluminum wheel hubs and these white tires.

In all my Dinky collecting years the toys with the white rubber tires are the hardest ones to find in good to mint condition.

Nice little find there, Dinky also made the 182 Porsche 356 in a slightly darker light blue also with white tires which is very rare.

I <3 LOVE my Dinky 181's I think I have like 12 or 14 different variations, they were built from 1956 to 1970, the longest running Oval Window VW toy ever made.

Some of my vintage VW/ Porsche Toy Collection

Enjoy!

Tom

here's the email, Tom sent me, at home, explaining the different Dinkys... like most of you guys, I sure like the Dinky oval line, just about the best... Please post your favorite Dinky?

I have about 12 to 14 different Dinky 181's the German Export Dark Petrol Blue, the Grey with Green wheels or Grey with Maroon Wheels are really hard to find, also the South African version and the 1969/70 ones are the rarest of all.
The #262 special edition Swiss PTT (Post Office) is also really rare, I was lucky to have found one like 4 years ago in Paris for $100.
I still need a RAF Blue with white wheels, a Grey with Maroon wheels and a Petrol Dark Blue and then I pretty much have them all.
The South African one is so rare that they made less then 3,000 I had someone make me one similar looking to an original one. Nice Yellow colored one.
Tom

... Tom really seems to know his stuff and is an inspiration to me... the roll kinda' like a Buddhist Master Smile

Yes, Tom is always playing with his Dinky, which is why he was tipped off to this thread.

My collection lives on the official Meccano car carrier.

Thanks to Tom for the light blue oval with cast hubs, similar to Zen's Dinky. (Bottom left)

Dang, Hacksaw, that's a great way to display them, except we all know Volkswagens never break down.

I'd like to take credit for the car carrier, but I took that idea from Rich Kimball who published a photo of this setup in Hot VWs, around 1983. It was one of the holy grails back then. (Still pretty cool now.)

well, I give you credit as well bb as we are all interdependent... seems all of our (human) ideas, come from other's ideas, at least in part... very few of us are that original... thanks so much for your creativity.

... cross country traveling busses were a common sight on the side of the interstate, years back.
When we lived in NY, we would go to Florida's warmth when ever possible in our bus... one time, it threw a rod and we hobbled into a VW dealer where we gave the Westy to a mechanic and rented a car to drive home... bought a Ford after that and put a Vanagon Westy interior in it... has been super reliable, over the years.

I have both the tow truck and the car hauler in a box of stuff from my grandma, she was a seamstress and had a paper grocery bag of cars all the kids would play with while waiting for their moms and dads to get fitted.

... what great memories must be in those bags... must all have great wear (patina). I like worn, played-with patina toys best... if you ever get a chance put a few items together, in a photo, for us... that would be awesome.
Our son, now 25 had hundreds of toy cars growing up... he actually knew more about the tuners, than I did... we shared all kinds of info. When he moved out to go to collage, he left all his cars. I put them all in boxes and put them away in the loft of our barn and told him about it... I hope some day, he gets all that and enjoys the heck out of it, with his kids...
We have set up a trust for him and his name is already on our deed and all his toy cars are there waiting for re discovery.

I liked to paint some of the cars as a kid so some are patina, others are “custom” with testors model paints. Even my original 16 box of hot wheels were not safe. Rolling Eyes now when I see them on the shelves it takes me back to those days crawling around on the shiny slippery Lino floors at grandmas house

Thank you for putting them on shelves. Old toys are like pieces of art, and should be seen rather than be packed away.
