The Goose -- My 1973 VW Bus Westfalia

Inspired by everyone elses build threads, I thought I would chime in with the original, unrestored, 1973 Volkswagen Campmobile Westfalia that I purchased from the original owner. It sat in a garage for 28 years. It was bought new in Atlanta Georgia, driven cross country, and around north Georgia before being parked in a heated garage by the original owner who was a car collector. I was previously a Vanagon owner (1986 westfalia).

Bus came with everything including every receipt, window sticker, the original tent and pop-up canvas which is still in as new condition. It had factory AC installed by the dealership, and all original engine components, including dual solex carbs.

I had the bus delivered straight to the Bus Lab in Berkeley, where they did a freshening up of all rubber hoses, belt, plugs, brakes, brake lines, etc since it had been parked for so long. The bus 93k original miles on it when I took delivery.

At 100k miles the 1 cylinder was low on compression, so I went ahead and had Bus Lab install a brand new hydraulic lift engine, and put baby Webers on it. I still have the original components of course. Runs like a top.

It was my daily driver living in San Francisco where we did dawn patrol trips 5 days a week to Ocean Beach, Santa Cruz, Pacifica, and would venture down to Big Sur or up to Mendocino on the weekends.

I'm now living in Encinitas. The only other non-stock additions were adding a cigarette-lighter outlet for charing a phone, installing Superlamb seat covers on the driver and passenger seats to protect the flawless seats, and disconnecting the factory AC -- the interior dash components are left intact. Also super nice after surfing in cold northern California water!

Wow, that is pretty amazing. Kind of backwards though, going from Georgia to California, so many are going in the opposite trajectory today.

What kind of roof rack do you have on it? And how high are the brackets?
