Howdy, it's been a while! I sold my 64 Notch back in 2009 and I've only had one other air cooled car in the between-time, a 66 bug which was a seriously nice original car with all the original paperwork. The most original car I'd seen in 20 years. Yesterday I went to see this 68 Fastback, and it's in pretty good shape, so I plopped down my deposit and I'm picking it up on Saturday. It's been pretty unmolested over it's 50 years, and still has fuel injection! It was last driven 3 years ago and one day it wouldn't start and they haven't driven it since. It has some surface rust on the pan that needs to be addressed, and I want to clean it up and get it running, so I'm going to be relying on all the posts Tram has ever made to see if I can resurrect this thing. The guy said the ignition is the problem, but not the switch. I'm planning on cleaning out all the tank and fuel lines, new points and fluids, and seeing if I can get it started that way. I'll keep this updated. In the mean time, here are pics.

Looks like a great start... I don't see the usual rust spots in the A-pillars, but pictures only show so much. It all looks to be there, that's half the battle. Even has an uncracked dash, unknown on SoCal.
Looks to have a Bug generator... it may overheat since it lacks the cooling hole, and it's made worse by that plastic brush cover that doesn't belong.

I will make sure to swap out the generator when I get it home. Also that ridiculous exhaust. But I'm keeping the wheels, I like them. Does anybody know if a dent puller guy can pull out the dented rear bumper?
I'm going to have to hit up Notchboy for cleaning tips on the car, I think a good scrubbing will do this car a world of good.
I'll post more pics when I get the car home on Saturday and get advice on my game plan to get this thing running again. _________________ 2017 Golf Alltrack

You're missing a couple pieces to hook up the aircleaner to the cool air from the fender louvers. Those turtleback wheels look good fully polished too. Chrome Shop is probably the only place that can pound out that bumper dent correctly. _________________ https://imgur.com/user/FisherSquareback/posts

Too long! Do you ever make it up this way anymore?
You laugh, but I have two parts cars in my driveway right now (not air-cooled). Because dammit, I'm going to make money somehow or other off those things. _________________ 2017 Golf Alltrack

It's the old "inside joke" about Fastbacks only being good for parts.
I haven't been up to Seatown since CFTC 2009. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

Yeah, these aren't my favorite cars, but the price was right and the car is so unmolested. And for some reason my wife really likes the look.
We are driving down to San Jose to visit family later this year, I'd love to stop by and say hi if you are up for it. _________________ 2017 Golf Alltrack

OK, so I got the car home yesterday. The car is pretty rust free, no rust in the rockers, some surface rust on the pans, no rust in the wheel wells and some surface rust in the front trunk under the brake fluid. The battery tray has rusted through and there are a couple holes around the engine lid. I was going to post pics but my phone is being funky so I'll have to wait until tomorrow. The PO said that the car hadn't been driven in 3 years but the battery is 1.5 years old and there is a gas receipt from then as well. So I think it was driven more recently. The car was resprayed at some point a different VW blue color and the paint is peeling up here and there. The drivers side fender is a little mangled and the rear apron is as well. The interior is in good condition but the front seats need to be recovered and everything else cleaned up really well. I can clean up the surface rust on the pan and POR15 it and fix the battery tray properly. I have a friend with a paint set-up in his garage and he'd help me spray it if I want to do that.
Here is my biggest question with some back-up information:
This car is helping to pay for my kid to go to school. He starts in the fall. We're going private school this year because his assigned school has failed 5 out of the last 5 years. Given the condition of the car, is it worth it for me to paint the thing and sell it or is it better just to get it running, clean it up really well and sell it that way? I'm not going to cut corners because that isn't in me. I've hated being the guy who bought the crappy car the PO just slapped together and I won't do it to someone else.
Any advice would be apprciated. _________________ 2017 Golf Alltrack

I would not paint it. If you’re going to flip it I would let the new owner make that decision. And it would save time by not having it painted. And if you need any advice on how to get it running just ask, I just got my 68 FI fastback running yesterday after sitting for four years. And there are a lot of people on here that are way smarter than me that can help as well. |

Godsbug knows how to make/keep them running. He was driving this sunroof notch the last time I saw him at Tram's place in Eugene.

I'll disagree with this and say I would paint it. Just do careful prep work. I think the experience of painting it is good experience to have and the nicer/ more trouble free the car is, the more you'll get for it. Win- win. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

If I paint, I’m going with the original color. You can’t go wrong with bone stock.
I will definitely look at your thread and ask questions about the FI. I know carb cars, but FI is new territory for me. I’m intimidated right now but as soon as the battery is charged I’m going to start trying to figure it out.
Thanks for the input! I have a lot to think about. _________________ 2017 Golf Alltrack

Don't be intimidated by the FI. I have the K manual that I need to photo for on here again since Photobucket got stupid. It's just simple troubleshooting and I have tons of A/B D-Jet parts. The main thing is don't try to out think it. It's not all that smart. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

If you are looking to flip it for a profit just stop now and sell it as is. You will not make money on a type 3 especially a fastback. Mark my words. Don't rest your sons education on this car. _________________ Stop dead photo links! Post your photos to The Samba Gallery! |
