So the problem is like this.
ABS / ESM lights are on in the dash. Fault lights started to come on once in a while and then more frequently until fulltime as soon as you start the car.

So I started to think that maybe this is just a faulty abs wheel sensor.

I took the car to a garage for timing belt change and asked them to look for the ABS fault at the same time. But fault codes showed fault in the steering angle sensor.

I changed the steering angle sensor to the aftermarket part.
Original 1 j0 959 654E

Aftermarket marked to be suitable replacement for
OEN 1J0959654AG — AUDI
OEN 1J0959654AG — SEAT
OEN 1J0959654AG — SKODA
OEN 1J0959654AC — VW
OEN 1J0959654AG — VW
OEN 1J0959654AP — VW
OEN 1J0 959 654 BK — VW

This was assured to me that this is the correct sensor but now I have started to doubt this.

After I changed the angle sensor and reset the fault codes. The fault was still there.

Next the internet wisards tought that the fault was not originally in the angle sensor but in the ABS pump unit and that would need to be replaced / send for specialist to be fixed.

So my question now is that should I now start the dismantle the ABS pump unit or might the fault be somewhere else.

I also started to thing that might the fault be in the ABS central unit under the rear seat? or something else.

And as a sidenote all of these faults started to appear after the rear brake circuit lost its pressure bacource of a leaking brake hose. But the car worked fine months after this event.

Balow is a full list of faults codes from the car.

Your's is right in that sweet spot for ABS module brain failures. Sending the control part of the ABS module in for repair would be one of my first things to do, and you can still drive it if needed.

With the exception that once you get the damned thing out of the car, you won't want to reassemble it without putting the rebuilt or used module on it first.

I was always able to get the module/solenoid assy off the valve body w/o having to remove the whole assy from car. I don't remember if I did ant NB's, those might be located in a less desirable location.

Yes the car is still drivable and works without ABS but you can not pass the annual motor vehicle inspection without ABS and that is mandatory around here.

It's backwards under the firewall above the steering rack.

Yep not possible without removal of the whole unit.

That really sucks, glad I only had to do that on the B5 (Passat/A4) platforms.
