|
|
Hey Ev et al.
First. Many, Many, thanks for this wonderful piece of the internet. I can't begin to say how much I've learned here, and I've even shared a little knowledge as well. It's a resource, an inspiration, and a family. Thank you.
Second. I notice that each of the forums has a "search this forum" box at the top, sort of a quick search if you will. Is there any way to add a little "Title Only" check box next to it? I know that there is a search function in the forums drop down where you can select title only, then select your forum, but it would be great to have it there as well.
Am I asking for the moon? Or is this a possibility? |

It never hurts to ask, sometimes it only takes one person if the idea improves the site. |
Jenn is abso-freakin'-lootly right!! Some times it does only take ONE person to request the hardest of tasks to do so... especially IF it only helps to make this (an already very righteous one) better site, irreverent of how hard the 'change' is to make to this site.

I added a "full address" field to the Show submittal form today, which will display a link to Google Maps if a show address or other Google-readable address is entered.
As you would expect, most of the shows will not have a link since it was not entered but I updated a few of the upcoming shows so you can see how it looks and works.
Thank you for the suggestion. |
Everett, I feel fortunate to be one of those that have been able to influence that way that TheSamba is able to bring Volkswagen enthusiests together...
Thank you for considering my suggestion.
Ev, you knew that you rocked before I made mention of the fact. Thanks, again, for the killer site.
I look foreword to donating to TheSamba, once I am able to sell one of the two VW's that I have up for sale here:
The 58' bug, and the 87' Wolfsburg. |

Everett, ever since this excellent feature was added to the forums, i find myself scrolling up attempting to use it in the classifieds....is there any way it can be added there too?
like at the top of this page for example: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/cat.php?id=33&sort=odate _________________ May of '72 Deluxe. 2.0L L-Jet CS & 091 trans conversion

Done! Please check it out and let me know if you have any feedback.
One thing
This search is a link to sort the category with the newest ads on top.
If you do a search from the search box, it just does a standard search so it does not preserve the "newest on top" sorting.
I believe this makes sense as you are going to the search screen/ search results listing, you are not staying in the category listings once you perform the search. _________________ How to Post Photos

Awesome thanks man!
The functionality as you described is right on too, no need to preserve that additional sorting if you are zooming in on a patticular keyword/part anyhow. _________________ May of '72 Deluxe. 2.0L L-Jet CS & 091 trans conversion

One more enhancement request along these lines....
When click "title only".... have that also search post titles.
Why?
Sometimes people make topic titles that, well... suck for searching on in the future.
Case in point:
A member just created a Split Bus topic: Hand Brake Cable
This topic was only interested in buses with late style hand brake handles and using a big nut trans. I provided a reply... and made my post title: "Hand brake cable: 1960 1961 1962 1963 with big nut trans"
If someone in this same member's shoes performed a search for their problem (brake cable for 1963 bus w/big nut trans)... they would have found an exact answer.
It's not very feasible to always control what people use for a topic title... so, enhancing the title search feature to include post titles will pick up more meaningful search results (if people take it upon themselves to enhance post titles). Which, I would do.
Most of the time the post titles are un-edited (topic title). I don't see users really taking things off the rails by revising to have irrelevant post titles... so, it could only be an enhancement... making the search more powerful. _________________ aka: Evan

you can always search for "can you help me?"or "why does this not work", you get just about any problem that way _________________ regards

Exactly!.... some user might have a topic title "Help me."
And, I'd like to respond... and have my post title mean something: "Help me with 1963 bus brake cable choice with big nut trans"
Then, those lame topic titles can be made irrelevant in an all-encompassing title search. _________________ aka: Evan

I think your idea is a good one but I have a feeling almost no one will try to do what you are doing.
Honestly I'd rather fix the actual overall thread title instead if it's not accurate due to the current content.
This will make the search results better too because a searcher will see a thread title that seems to apply rather than something coming up that appears to make no sense because the thread title is not as descriptive as what you added.
I'd rather you hit report on a thread where the title was not accurate and suggest a new thread title. I will update it.
I try to fix these useless titles whenever I see them - I believe other moderators do too.
It's a bummer because it happens almost every single day _________________ How to Post Photos
