Hey, it's been a while since I've posted and I've been working on the car here and there but now that the snow is flying I'm starting to get back into the grove of things. I have a question; are the couplers that go from the heat exchangers to the exhaust manifold absolutely necessary and if so where can I get them from? I don't plan on driving the car in cold weather or even wet weather if I can avoid it. Thoughts? _________________ 66 sunroof Fastback http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=590530

All that goes there is a wide clamp - there's no rubber.
Even if you don't use the heat - it's a good idea to get the clamp on it to help keep the exhaust stench out of the car.
It's #46 on the pic:

Ok that makes sense the fan would blow all those fumes in. I have that clamp on my bench somewhere. Thanks for the info. _________________ 66 sunroof Fastback http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=590530

It's been a while since I've posted. No I haven't abandoned my project, I've been chipping away at some small parts of the project through the winter. We've had a brutal winter over here and working in the cold garage hasn't been a priority.
The plan is to set the end play on the crankshaft, mate the engine to the transaxle, mount the body to the pan and then send it to the body shop this summer. Here are a couple of pics.

Yeah, I know it's been cold this winter. I haven't been doing much on the TA this winter either. Kind of hard to get motivated when the high's for the day are still below 32*F. Doesn't help when you get 2 nice days, followed by 3 days of near zero temps.
Nice job on what you got done though. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

I think I would leave the engine out when it goes to the body/paint shop to avoid overspray on the engine. They should paint the engine compartment too. _________________ https://imgur.com/user/FisherSquareback/posts

Good to see you back at it. Looks like you're making good progress. I know what you mean about heading out to the cold garage. Tough to stay at it with the weather as cold as it's been. _________________ Air does not freeze. Air does not boil.

Thanks guys! I've started to lurk at everyone's projects to see how things are going. So I should leave the engine out and just put the pan and body together and send it off to the body shop eh? I could mask the transaxle easily enough. If not I'd have to use a flat trailer and put the body on it I suppose. What would be better? With the flat deck I'm worried about transport and the body being damaged being put on and taken off etc. I have to go about 20km to the shop when I do make that trek. _________________ 66 sunroof Fastback http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=590530

I'd strap the body back on the chassis & tow it on a flatbed trailer. Tie your wood body dolly on the back of the trailer for the Body Shop to use. _________________ https://imgur.com/user/FisherSquareback/posts

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asbestos
That stuff wrapped around the heat exchangers
Known to cause cancer...
Also found in other things like older brake pads |

Oh yes. I’ll make sure that doesn’t become airborne! All my brake Bada are new now and I wore a respirator when I took the old ones off. Thanks for the heads up. _________________ 66 sunroof Fastback http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=590530

Since the pan looks done (or is it?), then I put a new seal in place and bolt it on, then send it to the body shop. That way you know ALL of the bolt holes line up. Ask Steve about that one. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

The pan is done and I have a new seal. Oddly enough I’m missing a bracket that goes from the pedal assembly to the pan. Gotta dig around for that but I can always do that later. _________________ 66 sunroof Fastback http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=590530

I wouldn't worry about that. In that form, it's not friable, and even if it was, it would take years of exposure to cause health problems, and there's not enough material there to do that.
Asbestos is still allowed in brake pads, as explained specifically by the EPA:
