We can check off door seals and door window rubber. That is one job I hope to never have to do again. All the write ups and videos state take your time and have patience. Sooooo true. Pieces went in and then taken out again. Very frustrating. Got one of the door panels in too. Just having a challenge getting the handles on. BTW the handles I bought from CIP are crap, I'm going back to my originals.

Tonight I finished the fuel cap. Some cutting, drilling, grinding and a quick tack with the mig welder. Done

Hi Martin,
Damn! Will we see this beauty of a "speed" car at the KP weekend?

Bill I hope so. I've been at the shop pushing Ray. Today we got one side of the engine assembled. Piston cylinder and head. Lots of measuring to get it right. _________________ I'm Martin

Things have progress lately. Lots of trips to San Jose to finish up the engine. Looks like Kelley Park will be this car's debut. Much thanks to Ray and Tom for all their help. It takes a lot of tinkering to get this done. I'm still chasing an electrical issue...more on that later.
It sounds great. This is a 74x83 motor (1602 cc). 8.4 compression WW Okrasa setup. Ported and polished heads. This feels sooo smooth. Nice mid-range power. Its awesome.
Now that it is under power and rolling, I've been working on the little bugs. Need to get a speedo that works while I get mine rebuilt. I have a short when the brakes are used. I disconnected the brakes switch wire from the master where it connects to the directional switch and no more blown fuses. So somewhere in there is a problem. I'm open to suggestions. Even when it was connected I didn't have any blinkers.
My wiper motor also doesn't work. Have to take that apart too.
I've still got a couple of weeks to put some miles on it. _________________ I'm Martin

That is one heckuva motor! I'm super jealous!
Do you have 2 different fuel pumps? The one looks like it is from something other than a vw, perhaps a 356 porsche?
Also, what kind of cool crank pulley and sump are you using?

Good eye. We started with a Porsche fuel pump but replaced it with a stock one after troubleshooting a carb issue.
The pulley is also Porsche repop and the sump is from Speedwell USA as is the exhaust.
Thanks for the kind words.

This has been one bad ass build! I'm glad you have been updating, because that engine deserves some more attention. Maybe even an engine video? |

A couple of weekends ago I went to the Bug Bash in Antioch and the car was selected as one of the Top Twenty at the event. That was nice...
It was a special weekend as it would have been Erich's 50th birthday. But he was there in spirit.
Other car news...Ray and I took it to a chassis dyno to see what it could do. We got 66.26hp at the rear wheels. Check out the posting in the Vintage Speed forum.
After the dyno run we headed back the shop and replace the steering box and king and link pins. It feels so much better. I also installed LED taillights from Vintage Speed. They are bright.
Next is to refurbish this camber compensator.
And replace the shocks. I'm also thinking about adding the Carrera style wheel spaces to increase the rear axle's tracking. The front is wider by 7/8 of an inch due to the disc brake setup.
We're having fun now... _________________ I'm Martin

got to spend some time on the car.
Mentioned to a friend how I was wanting to add spacers to widen the track of the back. And he says he had a set. Thanks Jim...
New Studs pressed in...
and a clip rather than a cotter pin.
Here is the next project...just need the manifolds.

Its been a busy weekend in my garage. A few weeks ago I posted on FB a request for a patina Hurst Shifter. I got a response and bought this.
I stripped it down - beadblasted all the rust off. Drilled it, painted it red and then sanded it clean again, leaving the read in the holes.
I got a new knob, rubber seal and cover.
It looks and fits great. _________________ I'm Martin

Great way to revamp the shifter!
So did you use the Renault 4cv lid for oldschool additional cooling slits? _________________ drive it like you just robbed the bank
you don't have to be crazy to be into VW's, but it sure helps!!

Yes the 4cv decklid has the same curve as the VW deck lid. I pop riveted it in place. _________________ I'm Martin
