I have noticed on my 55 oval that the gear shift is from a later model (i think) .it is thick rather than thin. Took it off and the the gear rod does not have a locating groove..and the gearshift 'ball' at the bottom is round, with a pin but it sits almost flush.. can i get a replacement thin gearshift without a locating pin on do i need to replace the rod ???? |

I am a little confused by your descriptions, but a '55 should have a strait shifter, like used on older bug models, without the locating pin on the ball. There are some for sale in the classifieds... should be able to get one for under a hundred bux... these shifters are fatter, rather than thinner stock.
A strait shifter will be a nice distinct '55 addition. i run this early knob on my '55, as well..
