OOoo!! Look! a real German pressure plate..!
Looks to be in good shape, too.
Those aren't available for love or money anywhaere these days.
The actual Fitchel and Sachs markings mean it's an oldie and a goodie no doubt.
Been at least 15 years or more..
Pull that pressure plate off of there and inspect the clutch?
Bet you it's good..


A couple other good things i saw was that the little screen over the fan intake isn't mangled or missing,
And that little oval plastic plug for the alternator adjustment is still there.
Because it's easy to take those off, they are often missing.


Now on the the little rectangular rubber seal that sits on top of the oil cooler,
the dished round seal around the oil sender,
The plastic ring around the alternator face,
etc. etc.

Reconcile every little bit with the parts diagram in the Bentley..


Be ready to take it outisde and get it all clean.
Clean clean clean..
Use a little pick, screwdriver, gas, toothbrush, carb cleaner, stick, spoon, whatever it takes to get all of the little cracks and crevices clean.
No matter what happens or what you do or find, clean is better.


Your stand looks OK.
The ones VW guys use only typically have two 'arms', so you will be fine.
Those V8 stands are overbuilt for what you are doing here, so no worries, you got three arms at least.
Those stacked washers look a bit sketchy for starting and runnig it on the stand maybe, but for what you are doing it looks fine from here, (FWIW).


Get the heads off, and it will tell the first part of the story...

If any of the lifters fall out afterwards, make sure to keep track of which hole they came out of..

Nice work.


P.S.
Don't believe 'Abscate' or 'busdaddy' could pick up a fully-assembled type 4 onto the stand by themselves.. Laughing Laughing

Alright, I'll be getting a helper to lift it onto the stand soon. Those 'stacked' washers are actually just the threads in the pipe I cut up for spacers. I will be reading up on the manual and attempting to remove the heads soon. Tips/tricks are appreciated!

I think you can order Gibbs Lubricant at the Walmart website even in Canada. Someone up there sells it. Gun Smiths buy a lot of it also.

Remove all of that tinwork and start getting it cleaned up for painting. I used everything from my die grinder steel brush to my drill with steel brushes to my dremel tool with brushes to clean the engine up. Came out pretty clean.

DO NOT TAKE APART THE FAN.

You will spend a fair amount of time cleaning up hardware using the wire wheel on your bench grinder.

I can't find any Gibbs, except on Ebay. I picked up some Fluid Film as suggested earlier.

Other than the tin, what else should be painted, and what should just be cleaned up and oiled?

Clean every little nit-picky crack and crevice and between every fin.
Top, bottom, sides and middle..


These engines cool by radiating heat.
They have no radiator.
If insulated by a blanket of grime they fry.


You are going to want to get a full engine gasket set.
(Unless this whole thing is just a rotten POS and you decide to toss it).


If luck is on your side, and the heads are indeed good or save-able,
You will want to pull the lifters and inspect cam.
(Keep track of which lifter came from which hole).

Maybe, depending upon what we see,
The P&L can be pulled, and the rod bearings checked.
Maybe.
Depends.
Get us some pics.



If it all looks good,
You'll be cleaning and re-sealing everything,
And buttoning it back up.
If not,
Then you'll just have to cross any other bridges to the best of your ability..

Did you send those injectors out yet?
What does your wiring harness look like?

Only tin painted.
All aluminum clean clean clean..

Some like to paint iron cylinders.
Others don't (myself included).

Did yo look at the bus motor build in my sig?

You can put tins in just a regular old sandblaster and just hose it down hard.

Most will want it tanked first, to keep their sand clean.

All of it is plain steel, so no big deal to tank or blast.
Make sure it's all steel parts you put in, no aluminum, or..?

Any shop that does real cars or trucks, or..? should be able to tank and/or blast if you don't have the stuff to do it.

Aluminum parts might like glass beads, plastic media, shot, walnut shells, etc...
But the steel tin,
Have at it - caveman style - it's tough.


My favorite is powder coat,
But rattle can or whatever works, too.
Just get it clean, so it can be fitted right,
And isn't weighed down my piles of muck..

It's been there a while, but looks like it's never been used. Lost under the tin, probably ruined someone's day.

So, am I good to just unbolt the heads now and have a look? Do I need to pull the lifters first?

Ok, trying to get the heads off, how do you get around these tins that are under the heat flaps? Does the fan enclosure have to come off?

So, I've been told not to mess with the fan, but it looks like I have to remove the alt and fan to get to the bolts to remove the shroud. Unless anyone can chime in with another way, I guess this is the route I will go.

Hopefully silence is afirmation, since the fan has been removed. I won't open the fan case though.

Now how do you get the head off without pulling the cylinders with it? Or should I pull them, then separate?

You can and should take off the fan from the hub, but don't take the fan apart.

The cylinders usually stay on the case when you pull the heads unless it's rusty like a boat anchor. You'll still want to pull the cylinders eventually for cleaning, measuring and if OK rings, honing, head lapping and base re-sealing.

Randy is talking about separating the pulley ring from the fan impeller, don't do that. But if you feel you need to look inside the shroud it's OK to split that.
