|
|
Hey guys, I'm trying to date my transmission to check if it's original for the car. 56 Oval.
No letters on there just numbers.
1277935
VW number is 113 301 103
C
so It's def a bug. It's swing axle. I've checked the list on the samba but they all suggest there should be an A in front of the numbers. There's nothing.
Also (this is the first oval I've done) The bolt pattern on the rear drums is not wide five but a four bolt. So this is confusing me as I thought all ovals were wide five bolt patterns?
Any help appreciated |

Hey, thanks for the response. No It doesn't have a split case. another reason why I'm unsure of the model?

From everything I can find and the fact that it's a four bolt pattern, makes me think it's a 61 - 68.
But I can't make the number match up. I was hoping it was the original box but it's not making much sense. |

A four bolt pattern was introduced at the '67 model.
So I wonder what makes you think it's a 61 - 68. _________________ a beetle is like a cocker spaniel, always funny but sometimes not listening |

As I pointed out
'Also (this is the first oval I've done) The bolt pattern on the rear drums is not wide five but a four bolt. So this is confusing me as I thought all ovals were wide five bolt patterns?'
So I have no idea when the four bolt pattern came in. But thanks for the 'help'
As I also pointed out my first thoughts in looking at the number was that it was a 56/57 ID. This car is totally bare rolling shell - has had a ball joint beam hacked in and has no engine. So I'm trying to figure out what I have - to make the decision on what to ditch and what to keep.
So based on my limited knowledge and the question from @EverettB are all 56/57 original boxes split cases? In which case it's easy to rule it out as being the original box anyway. |

With also having a ball joint front end, is it on a later pan? The rear seat belt receivers look to be later style... _________________ '63 Ragtop |

no pan is matching numbers and all signs are its original. Frame head has been hacked at to fit ball joint beam ( they cut the bottom mounts off).
But happy to hear if there's any other way of identifying the pan year

Yes, the tunnel-case (later) transmission didn't exist in 1957 _________________ How to Post Photos

As has been mentioned, the trans is definitely not original to an oval window Beetle.
That trans looks like it has been with that pan a long time though.
The VIN on the pan matches the VIN on the body?
If the frame head has been hacked to install a ball joint beam, that is pretty strong consideration for trashing that pan.
Dependent, of course, on how important it is to you to have matching numbers. _________________ The greatest obstacle to discovery is not ignorance, but the illusion of knowledge

I would not trash a matching numbers pan, I would repair it correctly. _________________ '63 Ragtop |

The body is pretty good apart from a few hacks that I can fix - but it's really solid. As is the pan - apart from the O/S rear section it's mostly just surface rust and compared to others I've seen on here it's like new
The vin numbers all match on the plates so I don't want to lose that.
So the only thing I need to figure out now is do I keep it to the later swing axle/upgrade or go stock and do I replace the frame head back to OG and source an early Beam or fit a later ball joint Frame head and use what I have.
Thanks for the all the info - been really helpful |
