Trying to correctly assemble/rebuild steering column from a 71 bus-particularly the upper steering shaft portion--any bearings, washers, insulating parts needed?; I think my dashboard mounting bracket/collar is okay-I did not disassemble it. Took column apart to install new ignition switch-that went sriaght forward. Now I am trying to get the horn to work-didn't work when I bought the bus. I can only find a 1968 steering column diagram or a diagram that covers several years--I think 71 had some differences? I am looking for a 1971 specific steering column diagram or even actual pictures of all the parts I may need-there has been some mucking around by previous owners I would like to correct if possible. Any help or input is greatly appreciated. |

I found this picture- https://www.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/464322.jpg
I do not have the cup/bearing? at base of the spring or the insulating ring/washer at top edge of the mounting bracket that covers the collar edge and I assume helps to separate the turn signal collar from the mounting bracket. |

Steering column changed only in some small details from 1968-1974. There's an exploded diagram of the parts at Fig. 9-12, Front Axle
chapter, in your Bentley service manual. P/N's for bearing, thrust ring/spring seat, and lock housing insulator are 211-415-585A,
113-415-589A, and 211-415-597 respectively. _________________ '67 bug: seized by the authorities

In my friends 71 bus, the steering column moves up when turning. I noticed this from the passenger seat. He said he didn't know it was happening. I drove it and its way harder to turn than my bus. Then I grabbed it and just moved it up and down, almost an entire inch. I looked underneath and you can see the rubber coupler flexing up and down. Something has got to be missing here, right? _________________ Mike D.

Anyone? Did a search, can't find another topic about the steering shaft sliding up and down in the column. I think at this point, we are just going to take it apart and compare everything to the diagram. _________________ Mike D.

The flange on the steering box splines might not be clamped tightly like it should be. The rubber
coupler might be torn or just plain shoddy aftermarket stuff - real couplers do not flex very much.
Maybe somebody forgot to put nuts on the coupler bolts. All sorts of possibilities. _________________ '67 bug: seized by the authorities

Anyone know the torque value for the four bolts that go through the steering rubber coupler? _________________ "I reject your reality and replace it with my own"

The Holy Green book says 1.5 mkg or 11' lbs _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.
