ok so i hear the advice. keep the 1600 and the discs. i just hope i can get them to stop squealing one of these days. i'm going to try that hi-temp rtv as suggested above.

i read on the samba that the wheels were actually black so i have since painted them black but w/o beauty rings. any suggestion on where to find a set of them? i called wolfsburg west but they said that the ones they currently sell are stainless and junky. they didn't have the nicer ones currently.

i'll just put the trim back into the front and rear window rubbers and continue with the interior changes. someone painted the chrome strip on my dash black, probably because the chrome started to flake off. i'll replace that 68 dash pad too so i can get the dash handle back and look more like a 66.

Sounds like a good plan. For redoing the chrome strip see what it looks like after stripping. If the chrome is bad you may want to consider having it done with spray on chrome. Its far cheaper than traditional rechroming and is ideal for trim pieces like this.

YOU, want to do it properly so you have 90% of the battle won. All the advice you have been given comes from Ghia lovers so accept it as it comes. Make the car look and feel the way you want it too and enjoy it every chance you get. The purists and thoroughly seasoned Ghia owner/expert will the ones who notice the differences, but only the purists will take exception.

Thanks Evil_Fiz!

Anyone know where I could pick up some decent beauty rings?

Thanks to NOVA as well. Yeah I've been thinking about stripping them to see what's under the black paint.

These aren't the best, but watch the 68 and up classifieds. Nice ones show up, but they won't be cheap.

It looks like the previous owner may have replaced a section of the engine bay sheet metal. That section just in front of the air-cleaner with the bump on it should be flat up to 1967. I believe this sheet metal was changed in 1968 when they added the auto-stick canister set-up.

Actually the engine bay side panels were 2 types up thru 64 1/2 model year (still in '64 cal. year). Earlier style had a large rectangular depression with an embossing in it. Front edge of the depressed area went just about all the way to the rear of the wheelwell hump. Right side would be nearly mirror-image other than the battery clamp retaining lip:

'64 1/2 thru '65 style had smaller depression without any embossing:

'66 would have the same as '65 except the battery clamp lip moved to the left side of the engine compartment, and the right side received the air cleaner stand.

Yes, theGhiaGirl knows her Ghia details!

Hylo, hope you can find a good quality set of the beauty rings for your Ghia. Try NOS, or BugCity here in USA (https://www.bugcity.com/shop/shop.lasso?pquery=beauty+rings). The shape of the cooling slots are larger/wider on the rings for 4-bolt wheels compared to the ones on a '66-only Ghia. 4-bolt wheels have either 8 slots. The slots on a '66 rings are more like small sausages- thin and long. 10 slots total. It appears that you have 4.5" wide deep-dish steel wheels which can influence the choice of ring sets, because the hubcaps sit deeper in the wheel center compared to the outer rim than on other wheels. 9556GR should work with those wheels. Once you have the rings on your 4-bolt rims together with your current hubcaps, the car will look fine. It'll actually look like a '67 Ghia from a distance because '67s did not have any side marker reflectors on the rear quarter panel, and were the first year to have the wide-track rear axle like the '68 rear axle on your pan.

Thanks Rome and theghiagirl. I think I'm going to go for the "border rings" rather than the slotted rings. This style: http://www.wolfsburgwest.com/cart/DetailsList.cfm?ID=ZVW34WW

What do you guys think of that style?

Rome, I'll have to check on the axles. I'm not sure if they're short or long style but the vehicle still has a swing axle transmission.

I kinda like the look of those but you have to commit to them permanently, the only thing that holds them on are spring loaded steel teeth, they will scar the paint & even the wheel themselves.

Those rings are early Ghia style.

If you are pushing for a 1966 look, which all of your posts indicate you are, this is NOT the way to attain it.

I didn't know those were only for early ghias. I really haven't found much information about when and when they did not belong. They just really caught my eye was all.

Thank you djkeev, I see now. So since the chassis change, the wheels are 4 lug, of course the slots on those wheels don't match what should be on a 66.

I guess I could swap out the rear drums for 5 lug drums. And maybe look for 5 lug rotors for the front. Then I'd be able to put the right wheels back on it with matching trim rings.

I've never seen five lug disc. The size makes this nearly impossible hence the four lug change.

Again, only the sharpest tacks in the box will be counting trim ring slots.

You can get aftermarket bolt on wide 5 disc conversion kits for both king and link or ball joint front ends.

Never knew they existed, knew about wide five to various other wheels.
