I'm putting together a 64 bug for myself, had one in the 90's and would like to set this one up as a driver with brakes that work well. Already got Empi front disc set, and now deciding on what to do with the rear. I know I had used later style IRS rear brakes but had trouble with drum machining on the re-pop drums I had used, as it was a super tight fit. So, is there a drum I can buy that will fit this, or should I not F around and just buy the disc kit for the rear? I have IRS backing plates, hardware etc, make it kind of easy to go that way. Thanks!

Not sure of your configuration with possibly using the IRS parts. On my '63 I added front discs and type three drums, shoes, backing plates and cylinders on the rear. The "snouts" (where the axle nut presses) of the drums had to be machined slightly. I was happy with the changes and braking was way better. Later, I replaced the type three cylinders with type one cylinders to slightly adjust the front-rear proportions (required minor shims to center the cyls with the shoes). Here's a link to some details: http://ranchotransaxles.com/type-3-brake-conversion/
