Bought an old, rough dune buggy to save the engine trans. The engine number is 235 Z 612. It is complete with small dome-top VW air cleaner and pulley for use with a hand crank. Has a PICT 28 carb. Wont turn over, but I bet it would if valves, lifters lubed up. Trans may be early also, still shifts easy. About 1950???

post a picture.

if the engine number does in fact have a letter in the sequence, then it is not an original number.

May of 1958 if that number is factory stamped.

It has an earlier lower pulley and a Bus crank nut - that is cool.
Pulley looks trashed though

Thank you for your help. The chassis number is 2045920. A reference chart on Samba would indicate the chassis is from August, 1950. The "Z" symbol between the engine number is about 50% larger than the numbers. They do appear to be factory.

no, that chassis number is August of 1958.

if there is a letter on the engine, then it is not an original stamping.

These numbers don't look factory to me - they are not all on the same straight line.
The 3 and the 5 look crooked to me

Can you post a more closeup photo so we can see the Z?

Everett, what's the difference between a bus or bug crank nut?
I thought there were only differences over the years...
Thanks

If he could clean up that # area, we could get a better more focused pic.

Thanks for your help. I'll consider it a 1958 model. Still think its early enough to see if the engine can be freed up, and the transaxle seems to be ok.

What I said might have been confusing - I said Bus because it looked like a mid-50s engine so I figured it might have been in a Bus at some point since only Buses had crank nuts by that time.

Here's a thread with some pics of different nuts, I think the 25hp is a little different if you look really closely:
