as mentioned before the triangle on top was used in ( at least part of) Europe for commercial vehicles with heavy trailers in tow. it had to be backlighted/shaded or upright/folded depending if a trailer was towed. You wouldn't have needed it if you had a BD Kombi with a smaller camping trailer in tow.
This BD must have had to use it either/and/or because it was a commercial vehicle, great total length or total registered load capacity over 3.5 (metric) tons (3500kg approx 7800pds).
imagine that rig goin up steep winding roads in the Schwarzwald, Switzerland or Austria...reminds me of the 1953 Lucille Ball/Desi Arnaz movie 'the long long trailer'... _________________ Hotrods, Fords, Veedubs and Triumph Twins !

it seems that Waly Byam was THE founder of Airstream trailers and did plenty of around the globe camping with lots of different tow cars. He certainly was a brave man. considering the 30 German Pferdestärken in that oval Vert.
Interesting that it has US specs blinkers but German export license plates.

wow, way to make me a liar
all the weights i ever saw on the airstreams were over 2000 pounds dry weight. and over 250 pound tongue weight.
i can't imagine that was ever legal in any country with laws.
theoretically, as long as the trailer is not heavier than the tow vehicle there is a possibility of if being legal, but i do not think these numbers match up here.
and 25 horses.... i have towed tons (literally) with a 40 horse but i know that was illegal. _________________ regards

The badge above the front number plate is an AAA license plate topper. Odd that the bus does not have a right side mirror. _________________ Jack Staggs

this has to be his 1955 trip. For 56 he had a larger gold color Airstream. Apparently the 1955 16 foot Airstream "BUBBLE" weighed only 1875 pounds dry. Still a lot of weight for a 30 or 36 horse motor.
more searching turned up this:
http://vintageairstream.com/photo-archives/1955-bubble-16/1955-bubble-16-x251/
#x251 was the only Airstream constructed with a magnesium chassis. Thus being light enough to be pulled by a VW beetle and bus. _________________ regards

I posted this last year. It was from an epic Mexican caravan that had hundreds of camp trailers and one barndoor westfalia. Hosted by the late great Wally Byam. There are plenty of pictures of him and his airstream in the link below.

Custom bows?
They look higher and more curved than the standard ones, but not as tall as the furniture wagon bows. _________________ Andy
