The seal around my engine is almost non-existent. I have the new seal but it appears the engine has to be dropped to swap the seal. Is there any way to do this without dropping the engine? |

You might be able to loosen the engine and transmission without fully dropping. Jack the rear end high on stands then support the engine and transmission on a jack and lower gently. It may give you enough room to work around. _________________ 71 vert build. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=572951&highlight=dead |

You can get it in without dropping the engine it just is very awkward. It was a long time ago but I think I slid both sides in first then worked the back edge into the channel as that has the best access with the tin removed. |

The foam seal may be the way to go on a Beetle, etc. It will squeeze in between the body and engine tin.
I bought the 1st one for my Bay at the dealership for ~$100. Next one I bought at the Import Parts store for ~$30 for the same thing 8(
Anything that keeps the cool stuff cool and the hot stuff hot is important on these machines, especially in hot weather. On a Type 4, the cooling fan is mere inches away from the exhaust. _________________ I know the pieces fit, cos I watched them fall away.

Save yourself a TON of grief and drop the motor before trying to install that seal. There are some other things you can do while the motor's out too: Check the clutch disc for wear; put a small dab of grease in the flywheel's pilot bearing; check the throwout bearing for wear and check both the engine's flywheel seal and the transmission's output shaft seal for leaks.
When installing the new engine bay seal, make sure that the metal channel in the car body is clean and free of dents. Use a flat blade screwdriver to pry open any spots that look pinched...especially in the corners. Also, try keeping the seal warm with a hair drier as you install it.
This simple roller tool that's used for re-screening metal-framed window screens can be a big help when installing a rubber engine bay seal. Place one edge of the seal in the channel, then push the other edge in as you roll the tool along it. These things can be found in most any hardware store.
