That is not a barndoor trans. that is a big nut splitty trans. I'm sure someone can narrow down the year by the numbers, but it will be somewhere between 64-67 |

Big Nut is named for the larger 46mm nut on the brakes.
Big nut transmissions are 1964-67
Your transmission also has the circle on there for the rear rubber bumpers, I believe this is mid-1965-67 but someone can correct me if that is wrong.
With rubber

It came new in a mid 65-mid 67 split bus. (I don't see a reverse light switch which would make it later 67)
Splitty= split bus = 67 & earlier VW bus
It can easily be bolted into a mid 59 through 67 bus.
To fit it in an earlier bus takes some nose cone mount mods.
There are some trannies in the classifieds now for $150:

It may be worth more if you are in Alberta, evidently. |

Does it have an "H" in front of the serial numbers? Below the input shaft inside the bellhousing are some tiny circles like this.
Can you do a photo of those close up? |

What are in those circles again? |
Cast on. They are upside down.
First circle: day of month.
Second circle: month.
Third circle first character: shift.
Third circle last character: year.
If his is a bus H serial number I'm going to guess late '65 early '66 ish. |

Hi...There is no Alpha code in front of the numerical numbers. I could not find any marking like described in the previous post. Only what I took the picture of...hopefully you can see what is stamped. This is what I think it says:
1
5s30
These look to be hand stamped.

Look inside the opposite end of the big middle part below where the shaft with the splines on it goes inside. You're at the other end. |

Are you telling me to remove the nose cone? Could you send a pic that shows more of the tranny so I can get a reference point? |

I wonder why this one does not have a Alpha code. Interesting. |

like the engines, they were all numbers for a while then the letter prefix.
as above posted probably 65-66? I posted about this before doesn't seem to be a list anywhere. _________________ 73 Type 181

Your center section is from a Beetle that has had the ring gear flipped to become a bus with reduction boxes. The reduction boxes reverse the axle rotation so in essence the third motion differential turns backwards to make the wheel stub axle turn forward. In a Beetle the axles would be straight to the wheels and turn forward already. |

I was under the impression that all the Tunnel-case castings were 113 xxx xxx because the case itself was the same. It is possible (and done frequently) to flip the R & P in a bus trans when doing a SAK. _________________ "My biggest worry is that when I die, my wife will sell all my parts for what I told her I paid for them"-Jon

Bus tunnel case would most likely have an H before the serial number. |
