Udidwht, since your on a roll here with hot tips. How about a good technique for setting float height. I spend what seems like a ridiculous amount of time adjusting those little buggers. |
Once they are set from that point on they should never be outta spec. I use a small angled set of needle nose pliers & digital calipers to make subtle adjustment/s if needed. _________________ 1972 Westy Hardtop/Type-4 2056cc

Thank you. That’s what I used. I didn’t trust they were done correctly the first time by the PO or out of the box and they were not even close. So I geeked out to set them up as Redline recommended. _________________ Keep on Busin'

So here’s my left carb needle. You can see a little ring around where it rests in the seat but I can’t really feel it with my fingernail. I didn’t try to test the floats but they look good and there is no fuel in them. I rechecked the level and they are perfect 10 mm.
The carb is so clean now that I’d eat my morning yogurt out of it. _________________ '65 Beetle "Lil' Lulu"- Ruby Red

Ouch.
Check the classifieds and see if you can source a top. Or contact Redline, Aircooled.net and see if either can offer you some advice on a possible fix. _________________ 1972 Westy Hardtop/Type-4 2056cc

I sourced a cap from FAT Performance in Orange, Ca. and remounted the carbs yesterday. From what I can tell, no seepage yet. I did emery the needles and meticulously cleaned them. All gaskets and o-rings were still good. _________________ '65 Beetle "Lil' Lulu"- Ruby Red

New needles can be sourced with viton tips on them and no more worrying about grooved needles. _________________ 1972 Westy Hardtop/Type-4 2056cc

2 days after reinstalling carbs and no issues. I changed out the oil of course but there was some residual oil that still gave a little smell to the stick but after going over KM mountain and heating her up it must have burned that out because there’s no fuel smell now. 😀 in the future I will change out the needles to the coated ones. Hope I don’t have to go in there til the cruising season is over. Thanks to udidwht for all the info. _________________ '65 Beetle "Lil' Lulu"- Ruby Red

What a drag. After about 800 miles and a Central Oregon cruise, I left the bus in the garage for 24 fricking hours. When I opened the garage door it smelled like a fuel dump. Sure as shit the damn case was 1.5 quarts over full and the stick stinks like fuel.
What the fuck is going on? When I took them apart there was nothing in them. The needles looked a little ringed (see photo above) but not too bad. The seats looked good, the floats looked good and I checked them they were 10mm on the nose when I reassembled.
The only thing I can think of to do is replace the needles and seats and the floats. Man, I'm pissed. My second $30 oil fill in a month and countless hours. What a pisser. _________________ '65 Beetle "Lil' Lulu"- Ruby Red

Yep. Test and or replace that stuff. But if I recall correctly. Wild things told me to use the new needle in the rebuild kit, as visualize inspection was unreliable. Sgkent taught me about testing float. Come on now. Not your first trip to the rodeo _________________ Keep on Busin'
