Hoping someone can help me to identify the correct replacement ignition switch I need for this aftermarket steering lock please?
I bought it off ebay. It has a working key but the ignition switch/electrics need replacing. There's no part number on it, but I believe it was made by Huf
(possibly Neiman?)
Either a part number for the switch or links to somewhere that sells replacements would be a great help.
I suspect it's not the same as the ignition switch on dashes.
Thanks!

there are 2 different sizes if it's the larger one you are in luck
http://www2.cip1.com/SearchResults.asp?search=steering+column+lock+ignition+switch&Submit=
If it's the smaller one you will need luck they are not reproduced that i was able to find anywhere if anyone else knows different I love to know I bought a nos still in the box very nice whole lock the electrical portion was smaller size and partially made of bakelite or like substance that just crumbled when I was hooking it up paid over $200 for it witch is now just decoration on the shelf not sure off the top of my what the 2 sizes are later on when I get out to the garage I can get a picture of the 2 side by side _________________ Rupert- 64 Sea Blue Beetle with 66 Dove Lodgette tent

Thanks and sorry to hear your story. Do you know the small and large sizes? I’ll then know what I’ve got.... |

Thanks for taking the time to post the photos. They are a great help. Unfortunately I now know I am in the same boat as you as I have the one with the smaller ignition barrel. The search is on!
So if anyone knows of a source for these there are 2 customers already waiting in line...
Thanks |

So, Ian contacted us through Ebay. We looked into this for him. The OEM steering locks were manufactured by Neiman, HUF, and Kolb. They came embossed with several different part numbers depending on which VW vehicle it was intended for and production year. There are some others that are less common brands, and yet others that are not branded "VW" but are identical in fitment and design. Lastly, some are new reproduction.
The vast majority came with a standard 36mm diameter electrical switch manufactured by Kostal or less common Bosch.
Some had 3 male blade terminals, 4 male blade terminals, or 3-wire female terminals depending on the vehicle's ignition wiring.
I believe that what you are looking for is the non-standard 28mm. Your steering lock is unbranded so I think you have a newer reproduction.
If you want to make your life easier, you may just want to sell the one you have and acquire an OEM with the standard 36mm electrical switch. |

Thanks to tweet for the extra background info. Finding a new lock makes sense but I already paid to have a locksmith rebuild the barrel and cut a new key.
I do have the original switch, it just looks pretty beat up and I suspect it may not work. I will try to refurb it before buying a whole new unit.
I'm attaching some extra photos for reference, as I suspect there may be a number of people out there with these locks fitted to their vehicles.

So I took the cover off of the back of the switch....the parts shown in the photos sprung out and I’m now not sure which order they go back together in. One is a brass contact plate the other a thin plastic film to stop everything shorting out. Can anyone let me know the order and orientation of reassembly please? Thanks!

oh shit same happened to mine it was installed in the car and i was hooking up the wires when the back just fell off and everything fell out onto the floor the Bakelite type material just started crumbling it looks like you are missing some pieces there should be some small ball bearings/bb's at the end off each small spring i think, it has been several years so can't remember how but I thought I figured out how I thought it was supposed to go together but could never get the back to stay on to keep it together _________________ Rupert- 64 Sea Blue Beetle with 66 Dove Lodgette tent
