PostPosted: Sun Mar 18, 2018 9:35 pm    Post subject: Brake Drum Stud Spins Reply with quote

I have early brake drums that have been drilled and studs with splines were pressed in. One of the studs is spinning, don't really want to re do a new drum.

Can I pull the drum off and just tack weld the stud?

Thanks,

I did that. Tack weld it down in a couple places near the inside perimeter of the drum. The steel doesn’t like to weld to the cast iron super well, so at some point it will likely pop off the drum. If you tack weld near the inner perimeter of the drum, the stud won’t spin on you even if the weld pops off the drum. Wink

You can tack it... But first I would pop it out and see if just replacing stud may fix problem.... It could be the splines on stud are just thrashed...

Tighten the stud with a socket or something between the lugnut and the drum so it sits square before tacking. Don't do a weld all around the stud, just one or two tacks.

I don't recommend welding a hardened stud to a cast drum. I would replace the stud and red loctite it in. or replace the drum

Dorman makes hundreds of press in studs. Find one with the next size larger splines area with the same thread size and press it in.

Section 10 pages around 160+ ...

https://www.dormanproducts.com/flipbook/dorman/automotive-hardware/2006-Automotive-Hardware.pdf

If you really need to you can order 1 to 100 with Dorman part number through places like Rockauto.com or any distributor that handles Dorman parts...

Yes OK to weld. We used to weld them in on the circle track ghia. Handled the abuse of constant left turns real well Laughing

thanks for the help/info/feedback!

I will pull the drum and do a closer inspection. Won't be on the road for a while as it's 10 degrees outside....wtf March?

Took it across the street to my landlords construction business, the Geschaftsmeister shot two welds on it in about 20 seconds. Perfect!

I prefer to tack weld them with a TIG welder and Silicon Bronze wire in 3 places around the stud flange.
