Alright... so I was googling around and I found a '67 bug body for sale. It's okay, has some parts I need, maybe even more solid than my car. I was thinking to put it on a pan and drive it. Then I thought no because that sounds a bit illegal, but anyway, if I can get this thing cheap, do you guys think I should get it and use it for parts? I feel bad chopping up a bug but.... _________________ '67 Beetle L41

Get it. In most states, the VIN on the pan is the one that’s accepted. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

Get that 67 body if it's in good shape and cheap and stick it on the pan from a 70s bug with a good title. the IRS, dual circuit brakes, 1600 DP, etc will make for a good daily driver with the good looks of an early car. You'd register it as if it were a 73 or whatever. Just make sure the donor chassis isn't a Superbeetle. _________________ 1973 Superbeetle: 1st car, owned since age 12. That’s why I leave them in place & cut the old pan off of them & remove the crappy aftermarket ones from the new pans.
Have you installed any of the other bolts joining the body to the pan?
If not, you might be in for a fight all the way around. You might be able to loosen any bolts that you have secured & get some buddies to lift & jostle the body while you try to align the holes a bit closer. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

Yeah my pans didn't have them. My original ones were messed up bad so I replaced them. I haven't bolted anything yet as I have to replace the channels too. All of the other bolts seem to line up except for these. _________________ '67 Beetle L41

Just use a dremmel or a die-grinder with a carbide burr to open up the holes. You might need to make your own washers & then use a socket head bolt (typically Allen or Torx) so you don’t have clearance issues with the tool while installing. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

Just know that a carbide burr throws metal splinters everywhere & youll drive them through your skin & calloused mitts just by trying to brush the shards off your arm, keep a few magnets around the hole to catch as many as you can. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

Don't let the frustration get to you. you're doing great. Heater channels are a massively big deal but once you have them fitted tight and welded in, you - and also the car - will feel like a million bucks. after that, it keeps getting better, and by the time you put paint/undercoating on it you'll have a hard time believing you were ever upset because it will look fantastic.
And when you feel the difference new heater channels and fresh heater hoses make in the "cool weather driving comfort" department... man, youll be absolutely floored. (i mean, you live it CT... theres plenty of opportunities for us north-east people to drive in the cold...) |
